This Is Love

Loving someone is so hard
Putting all your trust in one person
Trusting them with your heart
And hoping they don't drop it

Leaving you vulnerable
To anything
Opening your soul
And letting a stranger in

The cuddling
The kissing
The moments that are unforgettable
All because you took a step on a promise
A leap of faith on thinning ice

But what if that ice breaks
And you go shattering through
Dreams forgotten
Memories lost
Souls broken
All the love
Gone to waste
And you're left to move on
Forget it ever happened
And close yourself back up
Put up those walls again
That came down so long ago

And you think
"I'll never love again"

But what happens when someone else comes
And knows how to mend your broken pieces
And will promises never to hurt you
The do what that person years ago
Never could have dreamed of doing
To hold you
And love you
And make you feel not so vulnerable
Like a thousand splendid suns
And when you look back
You know that your past wasn't love
