Hello/Hi

안녕하세요 (ahnyeonhaseyo).

안녕(ahn-yeong) + 하세요(ha-se-yo) = 안녕하세요

Now that you have seen the word, here is some fun facts/background info: 안녕하세요 is the most commonly used greeting in South Korea and is in 존댓말, which is polite/formal language. When someone says 안녕하세요 to you, simply say it back to them.

안녕 means "peace", "well-being", or "health"; 하세요 means "you do", "do you", etc...

If you were to take the meaning of each section of the word literally, it would end up meaning "You do peace", "How is your well-being" or even "Please be healthy"; however, you will use this word to say Hello or Hi.

Thank You

감사합니다 (gamsahapnida)

감사(gam-sa) + 합니다(hap-ni-da) = 감사합니다.

This is also in 존댓말, and you will use this in almost any scenario where you would need to thank someone for something.  There is not a whole lot to explain here.

Yes

네 (Ne)

Use this when someone asks you a question or says something you may agree or if you just want to say "yes". Again, not a lot to explain. It simply means "yes".

No

아니요 (Aniyo)

You may use this one very frequently, or not at all. It depends on who you are talking to and where you are at during the time of the conversation. It is an important word to know though. Personally, I do not use it often which is why I am having difficulty explaining it.

***On my wit account, when teaching this lesson I did a sample conversation. Comment if you want a sample conversation for these words (it would obviously contain some words you may not know yet).  It would be posted as another chapter under the name:

"Lesson One: Sample Conversation".
