My eyes flew open when I felt the pain dissappearing. The fire inside me was becoming a pleasant warmth. It was kind of like sitting by the heater during the winter when you were freezing cold. My muscles loosened up and went back to their normal feeling. I took deep breaths as I sat up.
My fingers brushed the spot where Madelyn had bitten and I was suprised to find it completly healed. There was blood all around me but I didnt feel drained or anything. There was no sign tthat I had even been bitten. It was confusing.
I looked up to see Madelyn looking all pouty. "You might have suffered for nothing you know. I cant tell if it set in or not." She said bitterly.
"Why did you do that?" I asked furiously.
"I was tired of listening to you complain. this was the only way I could explain." Madelyn said, sounding almost bored.
I launched myself at her, my fist raised to punch her. Madelyn cringed and placed her arms over her head. My feet skidded to a stop just a few inches from her but my fist didnt come down. I couldnt make it go down. That look on her face, that innocent scared look...it made me stop. I lowered my fist and sighed.
"Will you just tell me the truth? Please?" I asked polietly.
Madelyn looked up at me in suprise as she lowered her arms. I guess she really had expected me to hit her. I wondered if she had done the same thing to Derek and immediatly after that I wondered what my best friend had done.
"Um...okay." Madelyn said awkwardly. "Follow me. I dont want anyone to hear us." She said as she turned away.
I followed Madelyn without question. She led me to a small park not far from our apartment building without saying a word. I watched her expression as we walked. She seemed really nervous and my curiosity was peaked by the time we stopped by the swings.
"What exactly do you want to know?" Madelyn asked as she stared up at me. I was happy to see that she was a few inches shorter than me. If she had been taller than me I would have died.
"Everything but first can you explain what the heck you are." I said.
Madelyn smirked a little. "Hmmm. What are we? That's a really good question." She said, making me smile a bit. She stared at me thoughtfully. "I think changing would be the best way to explain this. Okay Xavier, change." She said.
I looked at her in confusion. "Um Madelyn I dont have any clothes to change into. Besides, how would a different outfit explain anything?" I asked.
Madelyn laughed, something that sounded so nice that it made me smile. "I dont mean change as in clothing Xavier. I mean your form. Change your form." She said. I just stared at her in confusion, my mouth hanging open like a fish's. "Oh Xavier you look so stupid with your mouth hanging open like that." She said and I quickly shut it as my cheeks flushed.
"Explain." I demanded.
Madelyn nodded. "Imagine being able to do whatever you wanted to do. Imagine being completly free. Imagine your perfect life." She said. Madelyn thought it over for a moment. "Imagine eating fried chicken as often as you want and as sloppy as you want." She said.
I laughed and she laughed with me. I had to admit, I liked her a lot better now. She was looser, nicer, kinder. I guess biting me had made her nicer....wow that sounded creepy.
We finally stopped laughing and Madelyn made a motion that told me to go ahead and try it out. I nodded and closed my eyes. I tried imagining Madelyn's idea of freedom. I could literally smell friend chicken as I imagined running towards a gigantic plate of it. I laughed and tried imagining being able to do whatever I liked. I was about to imagine never having to work when another image popped in my head.
