As I was in the lot across from the DX, I felt little splashes of water on my face. It was raining. I heard thunder and saw lightning. Little drops turned into big splash of water. I didn't want to be soaking wet but I didn't want to go home. Home was the worst place I could be right now. I started walking somewhere but I didn't know where I was walking to. I walked to the corner of Picket and Sutton street and heard a car slowly pull up by me. "Hey kid, you need a ride?" it was Two-Bit Matthews. "Come on in Johnny!" If driving with Two-Bit meant that I wouldn't be cold and wet then I'm fine with that, even though Two-Bit is a pretty lousy driver. I climbed into his broken down car even though I didn't know where I was going to go. "Glory Johnny! You're soaking wet. Here, take this." He put his black leather jacket around my shoulders. "What are you doing walking by yourself in the pouring the rain?" Two-Bit asked.
"I don't know man, I just didn't want to be home."
"Well if you don't want to be home, then you can come with me to Darry and Sodapop's house. I'm headed over their right now. Darry's making cake and We're going to watch some television."
"Okay I guess."
"How have you been holding up Johnnycake?"
"I'm fine." That was a lie. Lately, My folks have been treating me like I'm nothing and when the old man's not hitting me or my mother isn't drunk and yelling at me they're ignoring me. But the gang doesn't know that. I don't want to make a if deal out of what's probably nothing. Besides, they probably wouldn't care anyways.
"You sure? You've been acting real strange lately.""Yeah I'm fine."
When we were almost to to the Curtis house, you could hear their radio blasting all the way from down the street. Two-Bit pulled into the driveway and we both got out of the car.
"We're home!" Two-Bit yelled opening the door to the house.
"Take your shoes off." Darrel said poking his head through from the kitchen while he had a bowl of cake batter in his arms. Steve and Soda were sitting at the table playing cards while the radio was next to them blasting The Beatles. Dally was leaning in a chair against the wall while he lit a cigarette and Ponyboy was in his own little world planted in front of the TV, watching some cowboy movie that's was on the television.
"Hey Johnny! How are you doing man?" Dally said."Good. how about you."
"I'm fine, I'm fine. Listen, tomorrow there's going to be a rank party at the dingo. You want to come? These guys are lame and they don't want to." Dallas always invites me to parties up the dingo but I don't like to go to those things because things can get out of hand of there. One time a girl got shot. I don't know why anyone would want to go to a party like that but have nowhere else to go and I'd rather go there then get yelled out by my folks. "Okay, Sure."
"Ponyboy, you wanna come?"
"I'll let my kid brother go to a party at the dingo when pigs can fly. Plus it's a school night." Darry yells from the kitchen. I always forget that Ponyboy has school. I don't know why. I remember that Two-bit and Steve are in school but not Ponyboy. Ponyboy rolled his eyes. I don't think He would
Have said yes to Dally anyway but I think He hates it when Darry bosses him around.Two-Bit came in front of the TV with a huge plate of cake and changed The station to cartoons. "Hey I was watching that Two-Bit!"
"Oh well. We want to watch Mickey"
"You mean you want to watch Mickey?" Steve said.
"No you want to watch it too. You just don't know it yet." Two-Bit said while he put a bite of chocolate cake in his mouth. I sat next to Ponyboy on the ground and watched Mickey Mouse. I don't get to watch TV very much because we don't have a television set at my house. After hours of watching cartoons, everyone slowly went home one by one. First Dally, to look for some action. Then Two-Bit, to help his mom out at home. After that Steve, to go pick up his girlfriend. Then Darry And Sodapop went to bed after a long day of work. It was just me and Ponyboy in the living room. "Alright, I've got homework to do. Are you gonna go home Johnny?"
"I guess." I had no where else to go.
"Okay then goodbye. Watch out for them socs okay?"
"Okay." And I left, walking home.
