I stared down at my boots. Plastic chipping, rubber soles worn; almost nonexistent and duct tape wrapped around the boots multiple times to keep them from falling apart.
Falling apart, just like my life.
Mom had tried to keep a job; but there just wasn't enough. The green slips of paper with a ten or five on it that seemed so meaningless, affected my entire upbringing.
I had to beg. Beg for food, money, clothes... everything. And it wasn't easy when you lived in Palrim. It was probably known mostly as 'city of lies' so no one had sympathy for me. They thought I was a fake; a liar, just trying to get money for drugs.
But the only liars in our city were rich. The one's with power, the big businessmen that controlled our government and the monopoly we lived in.
I hated it here.
But gates are closed both ways in our city. No one comes in; no one goes out...unless you have money; which I had almost none of.
So I continued my struggle for survival each day, trying to scrape by with a couple of quarters, dollars and if I was lucky: a warm meal.
I began to shiver as the sun slowly began to set, the colors slowly swirling, morphing into one, dulling into grey, and finally black. It was always bad when I had to spend nights outside alone in the winter. It was almost unbearable sometimes.
I began to walk towards the main center of the city where the most people would be to generate body heat. I got many disgusted looks as I slowly morphed my way into the wild, late-night crowd, looking for places to spend their money. I sat with my arms wrapped around myself on a bench as the heat of the people and signs for 'best way' began to give my body warmth.
All stores, money, banks, and homes were owned by 'best way'. Everywhere I looked, there would be a sign telling how marvelous the company was. It wasn't marvelous. The people who owned it were dangerous; controlling, and if you didn't follow the rules you'd be killed without a second thought. Of course, they didn't tell anyone this. But everyone knew, nevertheless.
I sit staring at unfamiliar eyes, some with wariness, others with lack of soberness, and others with a wild expression, like they may have cracked at any moment.
Suddenly I saw deep blue eyes that met mine. I was looking into the eyes of a tall handsome boy around 19 or a year older than me. He had a look of sympathy towards me. It was odd; I almost never had that look given.
He walked slowly up to the bench I sat at. Out of his pocket he slowly took out a bill. I was shocked. I was in the wealthiest area of town; almost no one would even consider giving me money. He slowly put it into my hands and folded his hands into my own. An electric shock ran through me that warmed almost every part of me.
I had felt nothing like it before.
"Stay warm." He whispered into my ears with a slightly shaking voice. He gave me a quick smile and hesitantly took his hands out of mine and took a few steps away.
I stared at him for a brief moment; until he began walking the opposite direction, not looking back.
I wish I had known his name.
I looked into my hand and my mouth dropped. He had given me a 100 dollar bill.
