What does dress code do? Does it teach children to wear respectable clothes? No. Does it demonstrate proper wear? No. So what does dress code do? It teaches girls that their bodies are shameful. It teaches boys that small clothes mean a girl is willing. My skirt that reaches my mid-thigh does not mean I want to have sex. My chain on my wallet does not mean that I want to join a gang. My hat does not mean that I hate my country. Dress code does nothing but make me hate my body. Dress code does nothing but make me afraid to look in the direction of a girl. What does dress code do?
Don't get me wrong, I don't want someone to show up in their underwear. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to see some guys boxers peeking over his jeans. But sending me home? Because my shorts don't reach my knees. You're sending me home? Because my jeans have holes on my thigh? Let's review the real reason. Because I'm not your favorite. Because I am not in IB. Because I don't have straight A's. Because my parents aren't from here. You can deny it all you want, but the real reason is that you are biased. You lie and act like your right but your words are hypocritical. You tell me I can't wear shorts for band but she can wear a skirt for cheer. You tell me I can't wear a tank top but she can run with nothing but a sports bra and he can run shirtless. They are your favorites. You let them get away with it. Yet you hunt me down. What does dress code do?
What does dress code do? That's the question. The answer is simply. You destroy self-confidence, encourage sexual harassment, build favoritism among parents, and so much more. Everything you say and do is messing us up. But hey, at least my knees aren't showing.
