Section ONE - Midnight

I open my eyes slowly. I can't remember what happened after the crash. I try to sit up but I am strained to my bed. I look at my arm, fearing the worst, but it's just a strip of tape. I tear it off and stand up. The room is illuminated by the glow of the sun, which shines brightly behind the barred window. I approach the door and try to turn the handle, but it won't budge.

"Hello? Is anyone here?" I shout, but no movement can be heard outside. I walk over to a desk and sit down on the chair, wondering what my options are. I'm about to try and find a way out when I hear footsteps coming from behind the door. Someone unlocks the door and turns the handle.

A teenage boy enters the room. He's tall and wears a fur coat. His hair is in short locks and his skin is tanned.
"Hey." He says. His voice gentle, kinda soothing.
"Hello..?" I say hesitantly.
"I'm Louis. I've been taking care of you." He glances at my forehead. I pull my hand up and feel it - to find that it's been bandaged all around.
"Thanks. I.. I'm Clementine." I stutter.
He reaches out with his hand, and I grab it, allowing him to lead me out of the room.

"Sorry about the locked door and the tape. You were looking pretty messed up when we found you, we didn't know if you would.. you know, turn." He says quietly. I listen to every bit of it.
"It's ok." I say.
There are two doors at the end of the hallway and Louis swings them open.
"Welcome to paradise, where the world is whatever you want it to be." Louis winks.
I'm presented with what looks like school grounds that has been overgrown though the years of not caring. There are several kids doing duties, but other than that, it's mostly empty.

"Marlon is our leader. Yeah, I know, kids run by another kid. But we do fine. He's over there." Louis points at blonde boy with large eye bags under his eyes.
"There's Violet, who's somewhere around here, lurking in the shadows. There's Will, he helps us run the place. And that's Ruby, talking to Marlon." Louis explains and I absorb the information.
"Are there any more of you?" I ask.
"Well there's Mitch, Aasim and Brody. They're out hunting. And Tennessee is most likely on the building somewhere." I nod.

"Come on, your kid's inside."
We make our way to the entrance, and I feel all the stares burning on my back. I hurry inside. There's a piano ringing in the corridors, but it mainly consists of some bad tunes and lots of pressing random buttons.
I look Louis.
"He was really intrigued, so I let him play around on it." He smiles. "He's a natural." I smile along with him. We approach the room, and I see AJ sitting in front of a large piano, fiddling with the keys, trying to play something.

He hears us walking in and looks up.
"Clem!" He jumps off and runs towards me, his hug almost tripping me over my legs.
"Woah there, kiddo. You're excited." I smile at him and he smiles back.
"I'm a.. a... A musician!" He says.
"You sure are. And do you know what else you are?"
"No, what?" I look him in the eye.
"Ticklish!" I start to tickle his stomach and he waves his hands wildly, laughing until his breath runs out.
"Stop it!" He gasps after I give him a break.
"Alright." I stop preparing to tickle him.
"You two seem like good friends." Louis - who had been silent for this whole time - says.

Louis has been playing the same song over and over while I check my stuff and talk to AJ. By 10 minutes, the song had become boring
"Don't you know anything else?" I ask him.
"Well there is one," he considers it, "But you're armed."
"I'll use it when I need it." I laugh.
He starts playing:
Oh my darling,
Oh my darling,
Oh my darling Clementine,
You were lost and gone forever,
Dreadful sorry, Clementine.

Light she was,
Like a fairy,
And her shoes were number 9,
Herring boxes without topses,
Sandals were for clementine.

I laugh at his little performance, and then start to clap.
"That's a good song." I say. "How was it AJ?"
He looks at me.
"It's funny... but it's loud. Loud is bad."
"Not always, kiddo. In safe places, we can be loud." I tell him. He nods.
I feel sad that he still doesn't understand what fun is, but he's never seen a day of happiness, has he? I hope with all my heart that this will be his happy place. The people seem nice enough, I think as I look at Louis and wonder how he's kept his humour alive with him through the apocalypse.

I feel a warm feeling.
And I have no idea what it is.
