The house was obviously locked. I didn't know where to go now. Had my parents moved to another house? Where could they have been?

A few minutes passed as I thought of all the places they could've been. This was the only house we had, where else could they have been?

The cottage!

I suddenly remembered. There was a cottage at the back of the house. The small house was facing the forest, it was furnished already. Father liked going there, it was now that I realised that the cottage was his escape because he even spent some of his nights there. He had given it to me as my sixteenth birthday present but I didn't like it at the time, I felt like he wanted to isolate me from society but now I will love it. I will take care of it and if he wanted me to live there, I would.

Tightening my grip in the bag, I dragged it behind me as I rounded the corner. Just as I suspected, the cottage windows were opened, curtains drawn and the door was slightly ajar.

My pace quickened. Its been almost a year since I saw my family. I had never left them until after father's death.

My pace slowed down a little. Would mother and sister recognise me with these burns on my face? Were they going to react like the other people I've encountered since the burns?

No… my family would accept me. The difference in appearance didn't mean anything. I felt stupid for even thinking like that. How shameless of me!

Once I arrived at the door I raised my hand and knocked. They weren't expecting me and the next thing I wanted was for them to think I was a criminal when I budge in. The fact that we didn't have guards anymore was making everything worse.

"Mom hurry up, I think they've arrived too early!" My sister's sweet voice reached my ears. How much I have missed them...

"They're here already?" Mom's panicked voice followed. "We're not ready-" the rest was murmured.

Footsteps followed, coming towards me and soon the door was yanked open.

Caroline stood in front of the door, a huge grin on her beautiful face. I obviously wasn't the person she expected because as soon as her eyes landed on me her smile fell. In its place her face scrunched in disgust.

She had changed dramatically from the last time I'd seen her. Her blond hair was longer, reaching down to her waist, her once pale skin was now tanned from hours of working in the sun and she looked like she had grown, she looked like a woman now.

I could say I had changed too. My hair extremely short, pointing in all directions, my face full of burns. My body was covered in bandages which needed to be changed soon. My face had the burns revealed to the world because I had no time to bandage them when I left the hospital.

"Who are-"

"Hey Carry!" I greeted. Tears were suddenly pouring out of my eyes.

"C- Cynthia?" Recognition reflected in those soft green eyes.

"Carry…" I whimpered.

Caroline's eyes roamed over my body before she crushed me into a hug, leaving some space between us to mind my injuries.

"Carry, what is going on?" Mother appeared behind Caroline. I watched as her eyes widen the second they landed on me. Tears gathered in her eyes, her hand flying to shield a pained gasp from leaving her mouth.

Caroline pulled back to give mother a better view of what I have became. Unlike Caroline, mother immediately recognised me. Its true when they say a mother can identify her child anywhere and everywhere.

"Cynthia is back mother… "

"What happened to you, my baby?" She stepped forward and held my shoulders tightly, trembling slightly as she spoke. "Who has done this to you?!"

I could only stare into my mother's eyes and watch the pain she felt for me, the pain that reflected in my own eyes only a hundred times more on her.

"Mother. Cynthia. Lets all get inside and talk about this later. The visitors are still coming- we need to be ready." My sister announced walking back into the house.

Mother turned to her in anger. "How could you say that-?"

"Mother… Who is coming?" I interfered. Had it been last year it would've been a very disrespectful gesture and a very impolite thing to do.

"Visitors." Caroline replied, her tone telling me that that's the only thing I needed to know. "You have to harry up and get yourself ready to met them, Cynthia. I'll add the finishing touches where needed. Mother, please make sure everything is well prepared. Everything needs to be perfect."

"Caroline we can't let anyone come here right now… Can't you see your sister is not well?" Mother told Carry very seriously. "She is our first priority."

Caroline whipped around, her blond hair hitting her face as her grass green eyes focused on me. "I'm very worried about you, sister. Don't get me wrong- but the people who are coming here are very dangerous. One wrong move on our side and we're dead. Our future lies in their hands and I want the best for us. I care too much about this family to let a great opportunity like this pass by." She turned to mother. "Mom, you know I'm right." Back to me. "Can you please go and settle in your room for a while, I need to talk to mother."

"Mother-"

"It urgent Cynthia." My sister cut me off. "I'll come and get you soon. Until then… settle down."

I sighed. I had many questions to ask. We had many things to talk about but despite all of these unanswered thoughts swirling in my mind, I turned and walked down the hallway to my room which I chose the day father gave me the house as a present.

What surprised me though was when I opened the door of which was supposed to take me to my room I found it occupied.

My once blue and green walls were now blood red. The bed which was purple was now black with blood red smudges on it.

I would have to ask everyone later and see who was living in my room. They knew that this was my room so why would they take it as theirs?

I dragged my luggage to the room next door and settled there. Everything here was white and cream. I assumed it was supposed to be a guest room.

My skin under the bandage was getting itchy so I immediately went to take a shower and after that I applied new bandages as best as I could and this time I bandaged my head.

I had taken the time to escape earlier today when the nurse left the room because I new I wouldn't get another chance had I not left then. The doctor had suggested that waiting in the hospital until I was fully healed would've been a good idea but I wanted to come to my family.

I suddenly felt tired and decided on taking a nap. Some strangers were coming to the house and I had to find out what they were here for. According to my sister they were dangerous but they could help us.

Darkness enveloped me with that being my last thought.
