"scarlett baby, I'm so sorry" cried my mother as soon as i stepped foot into my house, i ran to her side and held her hand in mine.

"why are you sorry, mommy?"

"it's the end..." she sniffled and grabbed my face "they'll be coming to get you, to take you somewhere safe. i can't come with you but he'll be there"

"you're scaring me, who's 'he'? why aren't you coming with me? where am i going?" i asked frantically, before my questions were answered, a man and a woman wearing suits stepped into my house.

"scarlett crimson? it's time to go" deadpanned the woman

"what? no! i'm not leaving my mother!" i cried out, by the expression on the woman's face i could tell she wasn't pleased with my answer.

"we can't accept that" just then, two men in bulletproof suits bursted through the door, dragging me away.

my mom wrapped her arms around my neck and whispered in my ear,

"find him..."

that had been the last time i heard my mother's voice. after that, i was put in a cell with two other people, emily and timothy. not long after that, we were thrown in a place called 'Outpost 3' and met a woman named wilhemina venable but only allowed us to call her ms venable. me, emily and timothy were told we were purples because of our genetic makeup, whatever the hell that means.

last i'd heard-or seen of humanity, it was non-existent. that's what we told the others as well. so here i am, laying on a couch next to one of my only friends emily, as the lack of food had begun to take its toll on me, around a bunch of random people. funny how it's been eighteen months with all the same people yet i barley know them.

gallant was okay, he's pretty funny so i guess i can't complain too much.

coco is annoying and bratty, her voice sounds like knives on a chalkboard. by the amount of shit that comes out of her mouth I'm surprised her ass isn't jealous.

evie is also annoying but I've never been one to disrespect elders. it's obvious she hates her grandson but that's none of my business.

mallory is actually pretty nice, i feel bad that she was downgraded to a gray and also downgraded in general by coco. in the amount of time i've been here, she's the only one who was able to cheer me up a bit.

i lifted my head from emily's shoulder and decided to stretch my legs and look at the library around us. i've never been a big reader, before the end, i'd mostly spent my time singing in my room with my teddy bears as a crowd. a time when i used to be happy and free.

i jumped in shock as a loud siren blared throughout the entire facility and judging by the look on venable's face, i could she was just as shocked as the rest of us. standing next to the others, me and mallory shared a confused and fearful glance when the fist announced that there's been a breach.

venable turned to us. "go to your rooms, now. do not come out until orders are given" everyone scattered off.

before i got a chance to take a step forward, venable grabbed my wrist. "go to your room, lock the door and wait until mead tells you to leave. do you understand?" i nodded and walked myself up to my room.

i couldn't shake off the weird feeling i had after that. why had venable given everybody else different orders? why did i have to wait for mead while everyone else waited for 'orders'? these questions made my stomach turn, mostly because of the lack of food in my system.

untying the updo mr gallant had made earlier today, i sighed and ran my hands through my long red hair. looking at my hair always reminded me of my mother. she would always do crazy hairstyles on me, she always said it was because my hair reminded her of a beautiful red fox she saw when she was 13. even after months and months i could still remember when she'd tell me her story of the beautiful red fox she saw once upon a time.

i miss her

my head snapped up at the sound of my door creaking open

i thought i locked it?

"mead? mead is that you?" i asked getting up off the bed and walking to the half open door. i peaked out the crack of the door only to be faced with nothing but silence and an empty hallway.

"ms venable?" i asked out into the empty hallways, stepping out of my room.

in my peripheral vision i could see a dark figure turn a corner. as stupid as this sounds, i followed it. total basic movie bitch move but it wasn't like freddie krueger was gonna pop out and stab me. not in here at least.

the angel on one shoulder kept telling me to go back, to listen to venable and wait for mead.

but the devil on my other shoulder was telling me to follow the shadow, that maybe it's just emily and timothy sneaking around again. i was just freaking myself out, right?

the anxiety in my chest started to rise up as i turned the corner to see....nothing?

nothing? i was at least expecting to walk into emily or mallory but not an empty hallway. i sighed and turned around to walk back to my room, only to bump myself into a wall.

"and what are we doing out of our room, scarlett?"

not a wall, not a wall!

my eyes slowly looked upward, taking in the sight in front of me.

"micheal?"
