I Used To Live There
Part Three
Maya's view of the small town of Madison drifted from view as she lightly tapped on the side of her phone.
She hummed a freedom song she had discovered mere days before this event occurred.
There were few people on the bus, with several appearing to be weary travelers. That's when Maya realized that she might not have enough money for lunch.
She knew that Markie would help her out, but Markie was waiting at the bus station in Miami. The next stop was in Jacksonville.
But, she didn't care about food. She just wanted to get out.
Once again, she had the urge to glance down at her phone. Another new message notification appeared as her music stopped again for a few seconds to divert her attention to the screen of the device to view the text.
Ashton: Two New Messages
She pursed her lips and swiped the notification off of her screen to reveal her dog, Cookie.
"What a stupid name." Maya thought. "Poor dog."
"Excuse me, Miss." One of the passengers leaned over. "Where's your stop?"
Maya blinked. "Um, Miami. What about you? Do you need something?"
"Yeah. I need some money for lunch in Jacksonville. D'you think you can give me a five or a ten?" The passenger, a white woman asked.
"Yeah, sure." Maya said as she forked over a ten she had in her pocket. The woman accepted it and thanked Maya for the gesture.
Maya nodded in response and made a mental note to try to find an ATM in Jacksonville.

"Maya! Come on!" Ashton shouted as he made a face at his phone as if it would make Maya respond faster.
Cookie pawed at his leg and he took a seat on the floor.
"It's okay, Cookie. We'll get through this together."
