"Come on, this way!"

I turn and run, following the Doctor and ducking from the energy blasts shooting at us. My heart quickens as my feet pound the pavement. Any second now could be my last.

The Doctor turns towards a tall blue Police Box and slips inside. "Quick, in here!" she calls, but my pace slows as I look over the box in disbelief.

"It's made of wood - he'll blast straight through!" I protest. A shot of red light beside me forces me to push on, and moments later I pass through the box and close the door behind me.

I stand behind the door for a moment, my nose inches from the glass, breathing deeply. It shudders as the blasts hit the outside of the box, and I close my eyes, waiting for the inevitable. But it doesn't come. After a moment, the sound stops altogether and I bring myself to open them.

I step backwards, feeling for the hard wooden back but only feel empty space. A sudden mechanic whir sounds behind me and I spin around, then gasp, my eyes widening in surprise as I take it in.

I seem to still be standing inside the police box, and yet there's a room in front of me that extends far past the four-foot width of the box. The walls are decorated with many hundreds of hexagons joined together like honeycomb - some of which look to have spokes from car wheels embedded in them. In the middle of the room stands some kind of control panel, with tall crystals arching over the top and glowing a deep orange.

The Doctor looks over as she pulls a lever down on the control panel, and grins. "So ... what d'ya think?"

I move my mouth, trying to get the words out. It's unlike anything I've ever seen. "How ... how is this possible?"

"My people were super clever," she replies. "It's basically one dimension merged with another – makes it bigger on the inside. It can also travel in time and space. So –" she smiles, "d'ya wanna go forwards or backwards?"

"Um-" I say, my mind racing, "backwards? How about the court of Louis XIV?"

"Perfect!"
