—California—
Fury was sitting in his office, gulping down water during a hot sunny day in California. Files were laid across his table, looking for signs of a task force designed to protect Earth. He had been working for days. Just for someone who could protect Earth long enough for him to find more people.
But instead of looking for people, he was disturbed by something ringing. It wasn't on his desk. It was inside. He pulled out his drawer and saw the pager ringing.
"Hello? Carol? Can you hear me?" Fury asked.
"Hey, yeah. This is Carol. I'm in space and, you know I'm having a blast." Carol chuckled.
"Seems fun floating around space while Coulson and I are beating it under the sun." Fury joked. "Is space being a bitch?"
"It's been fun. Haven't met a lot of people but I enjoy the scenery. It's really pleasant to the eyes."
"Look at you. Sight-seeing on planets while I'm staring at an infinite desert." Fury started to feel sarcastic, "Shame on you."
Carol laughed softly, "Ever since I left, you started stepping up your game in joking, huh?"
"Well, I wanted to be like you. Having fun at work. Making people life. Started to be like that." Fury smiled. "So, what are you doing now?"
"I'm just..." Carol sniffed a little on the other side, "holding on."
"To what, Carol?" Fury let out a small chuckle, thinking that she was making a joke.
"This might be my last call... to Earth." Carol said while tearing up. Fury could tell by the way her voice was sounding. "I just wanted to know that you've been a great mentor and tell Coulson he's a great guy."
"Agent Danvers, answer my question. What are you holding on to?" Fury asked with concern.
"We has this plan, to blow up this Skrull army. Instead, it was intended for thei-their race." Carol continued talking even though her voice was breaking down. "I don't want to be held responsible to that."
"Don't think it like that Carol. Don't give up your life, Danvers. You are a great symbol to our country. You make us keep on fighting."
"Thanks Fury. But I can't let go off this missile because it's going to go to another direction and end up blowing something else."
Fury closed his eyes in silence. This is the one thing he didn't want Carol to do, give up her life for something. Even though it's inspiring, she had so much to live for.
"Where are you going now, Carol?"
"They told me to go to some place named Jotunheim. It's a place where it's made of ice and I heard that the missile won't go off because of too much... ice, you know." Carol sniffed but fought to let out a small chuckle.
"I understand what you're doing, Carol. You're doing what's right for this planet and the galaxy." Fury smiled proudly. "Anything else you want to ask."
"Tell my family... you know it already." Carol laughed which was followed by Fury.
"It was a pleasure working with you, Carol Danvers. Until we meet again."
"Indeed."
The call was ended and Fury placed the pager down. Instead of throwing it in the trash, he kept it to remind himself that super-powered people could be difficult sometimes, even evil, but there's always something good in his heart.
On the doorway, Coulson was leaning. He had listened to the whole conversation and Fury just smiled.
"So, she's gone. We didn't know each other well but, I knew she would do anything that's right." Coulson said.
"She said that you're a good guy and I believe you. For that, we need a celebration for Carol Danvers bravery and hardship. Drinks are on me." Fury smiled. "Tell them all."
—The End—
(Note: THANKS AGAIN FOR THE SUPPORT ONCE MORE AND DETECTIVEKM FOR EDITING THIS WORK. I had some fun writing this because of its setting and how powerful Carol is. But we are halfway done with Phase 3 so I'm still deciding which book will follow. But let's put that aside, THANK YOU FOR READING AND EXCELSIOR.)
