At 6 AM the aggressive little pink and green polka dotted alarm clock went off. Edie had had it since fourth grade when she saw it in the window of a shop. Violet thought it would match Edie's room perfectly. Of course, as Edie grew the plastic alarm clock clashed more and more with her more adult things, but she always kept it around. After all, it was reliable. That stupid little alarm clock seemed to be the last reliable thing she could hold onto. But of course, the alarm meant she had to get up. As Edie walked around the bed she spotted the outfit she'd laid out for her first day of work. Pristine council white. As she put on the white pencil skirt and flowing blouse she suddenly felt much too old. So she slipped on the pointed white heels and moved to the bathroom to do her makeup.

When she was ready she made her way down the same grand staircase she had walked down for years. Except now she was walking into a new life. Violet and Edie had planned to make the trek to work together, she would've been here by now. So she slid into the kitchen where Elizabeth was making pancakes. Elizabeth had been the family chef for over 30 years, so she'd watched Edie grow up. "Edie, today's the day!" Edie nodded politely but there was a glint of what was either fear or anger. Elizabeth couldn't tell. "Where's Violet?" Trilled Elizabeth as she continued stirring the batter. "You didn't hear? Beth, oh my god. They took her away, they dragged her away like some sort of rag doll!" As Edie cried Elizabeth came around to wrap the girl in a hug. Elizabeth had always been the motherly figure in Edie's life. Vivian was never one to comfort. So they stood there, Edie crying and the pancakes abandoned on the countertop.

Eventually, Elizabeth had to pull away, Edie had to go. So she made her way to the centre of the city. The steel doors had always been intimidating, but now on her own, it was like entering purgatory. Edie couldn't keep still, her foot tapping on the ground. What are you supposed to do when your entire life is set out in front of you and all you have to do is click play. So she clicked play and opened the doors to the unknown. Suddenly she was surrounded by movement. Council members left right and centre all in blinding white clothing. All except Edie as she bumped straight into a stranger holding a cup of coffee. A man broke the silence "Shit!" Edie looked up into a pair of eyes. She knew that face. Ivans annoyance suddenly broke into a smile as he recognized Edie. "Oh my god it's you." Edie laughed. "The one and only Ivan, professional ruiner of first days. I am so sorry!" Edie's smile broke when she looked down at her now stained blouse. "Oh, it's okay... I just don't know what I'm going to-" Ivan slipped off his jacket interrupting Edie "Here, put this on top and roll up the sleeves. It might even look sort of fashionable?" he said the last bit like a question until Edie slipped on the jacket and made it her own. "Oh yes, this is definitely going to be a runway look this fall." The two laughed again before realizing they were now blocking the entrance to the council room. Edie looked apologetically at the small crowd starting to form. As the two parted to let people in, Ivan disappeared. Leaving Edie alone again.
