chapter two

december 20th, 12:30pm

millie found that the foster home was nicer than she pictured. but to be fair, she pictured a count-olaf type mansion, with the broken wood painted black and ravens circling it's crooked roof.

but rather, it was normal. beige. suburban. it looked big enough to fit six kids, and there was a minivan parked outside with a sticker on the back that said "#1 MOM"

as millie got out of the car, she drew her eyebrows together.

wasn't joe a masculine name?

david closed the trunk, from which he had pulled a large green suitcase. he rolled it up to her, watching her gaze, which trailed up to the top of the house.

she could see that through the window there was a boy there watching. the blinds were halfway folded, so she couldn't make out the face, only the voluminous black curls atop his head.

she crinkled her nose and looked towards the door as david began to guide her to it.

when she looked back the figure was gone.

she tried not mind it. and it wasn't hard, considering that she had to focus on her new dad— or mom, it wasn't really clear at that point— and impressing them.

david practically pounded in the door, the tap of his knuckles echoing through the wind.

they waited.

millie felt the cold finally reach her fingertips, a chill running down her spine, probably from the the snowflakes that lay on her shoulders. or the nervousness.

definetly the nervousness.

suddenly the door was opened.

by a man. millie tilted her head at him immediately. he has long hair, for a dude, and a warm smile. he seemed inviting, wearing a button-down shirt with a wool sweater thrown over it and some jeans.

"david harbour! nice to see you again," joe said. he glanced at millie and winked at her as he felt out his hand to shake, "and it's nice to meet you, millie,"

millie's handshake game was weak, and she was sure joe noticed it when he took her hand. but he didn't seem to care at all, though, as he invited them in with the same smile on his face.

he even took smilies suitcase and set it to the side. millie wiped the snow off her boots and as she entered she looked up and around the new place she would call home.

there were five new pairs of eyes on her. she didn't notice at first and she was startled by how she was suddenly the focus of five pairs of eyes.

they were all standing on the staircase glancing at her with curious eyes. strangely, she felt naked despite the layers of clothes.

david and joe started having their own conversation, and millie felt weird just standing there, being ignored by them yet the center of attention from the teenagers.

a redheaded girl at the bottom of the staircase suddenly broke from her statue-like trance to greet her. she didn't seem like the handshake type, seeing as she just waved at millie, smiling warmly.
