A fight had broken out at the party. Two young lads were really going at it and the music had stopped, the only noise being the chatter of onlookers.
Mara stormed in and got between them instantly.
"Oi! Stop what you're doing immediately! I'm a police officer and could very well arrest you two for disturbing the peace!" she said assertively.
There were a few gasps from the surrounding crowd of party goers, some recognising Mara from before.
"Sorry officer! It won't happen again" said both men in unison, rather intimidated by Mara's stature and authority.
"See that it doesn't. You're ruining everyone's night!" replied Mara sternly.
"Get back to your drinks everyone! Nothing to see here!" said Mara to the whole crowd, all of them unsure what to do.
Mara had to now switch back to her social side.
"Oi DJ! Turn the fucking music up!" she yelled laughing.
Everyone else went back to what they were doing and the party resumed, laughing and joking, appreciating Mara ending the tension after the scuffle.
Will and Simon came over to her.
"You handled that pretty well. I'm impressed, if a bit terrified." said Will half-jokingly.
"Yeah you're a badass bitch!" added Simon, laughing.
"Thanks Will! You shouldn't be afraid of me! I'm harmless really!" said Mara laughing.
"And thanks Simon, what a wonderful compliment." she retorted sarcastically while laughing, causing Simon to laugh too.
Stephen then came over, exchanged a joke with the boys and then turned to Mara:
"Hey, can I talk to you privately Mar?" he asked, almost pleadingly.
"Er sure Ste, of course." replied Mara, glancing quickly at Will and Simon, the two of them shrugging their shoulders, albeit with slight grins on their faces.
Stephen took Mara out to the balcony, into a corner out of earshot of everyone else outside.
"Are you ok Ste? You seem jittery" said Mara concerned.
"I think I am, I just wanted to say something to you." said Stephen. Mara had a feeling where this was going as he was a bit drunk.
"Mara, you mean a lot to me. I know 3 months isn't a long time but it's gone so fast because it's been such a blast getting to know you. Doing comedy is great of course, it means I don't take things overly seriously and I can really connect with people and break the ice. Sometimes though I need the support that only friendship can provide, when a situation requires a bit more seriousness and you've given that to me. I really appreciate your friendship, your understanding and your empathy. You're a wonderful person. Anyway, I was wondering if er, If er, you wanted to go out for a drink or something sometime?" Stephen slurred this speech entirely.
Mara's thoughts about where this was going were confirmed. She sensed Stephen liked her, but she had never thought about how to respond, she'd always been laughing with him too much to seriously give it thought. She responded with a tone of sincerity, but thinking about relationships and dating opened up her mind to old wounds she had tried her best to bury deeply in the recesses of her memory.
"Ste, I'm really flattered, I feel the same way too, you're the best friend I could ask for and I love you and your friendship, but I'm just not sure I'm ready for that now." She did like him in that way, but other things were on her mind.
Stephen looked despondent but he nodded, indicating he understood where she was coming from. Mara instantly tried to comfort him. She put her hand on his cheek.
"Listen Ste, I like you a lot, of course I do, but I'm not sure I'm ready for that next stage yet. The last time I was romantically involved with someone, it was a pretty low point of my life." said Mara sighing, bottling up the feelings from her previous relationship. She let out a small tear, but she kept herself together. Mara was very strong willed and determined, she often found it difficult to open up as she was not the most emotional person going, her experiences in life shaping her and moulding her to be like this. Stephen noticed she looked down and engaged her in conversation again after a long pause, both of them holding each other, hand in hand.
"Do you want to talk about it?" he asked, gripping her hand tighter.
"I don't think now's the best time. I will tell you one day, but we're at a party, we should be enjoying ourselves right now!" said Mara, her tone shifting from melancholy to excitement. She dragged Stephen back onto the makeshift dance floor, danced the night away and got incredibly inebriated.
*Next Morning*
Mara woke up groaning.
"Fuck me, my head."
She looked at her phone, her boss sending her a text reminding her, she was on duty later in the evening. She gestured with a middle finger towards the phone, not in the mood to think about work. She then realised she was still in Will's flat with party decorations strewn all over the place. She was however in a adjoining room to the living area and in a bed, and then she realised, she wasn't in the bed alone...
