I woke up suddenly out of the blue around two that night. I noticed how quite the house was; i knew that everybody else in the house would be fast asleep. i couldnt help but wonder what had just made me wake up as i never woke up during the night. I thought of that old saying, about how when you wake up for no reason during the night it means somebody's watching you. Chills ran down my spine. I glance around the room, wondering how true the saying was, and came to the conclusion that none of it was real. Laying back down, I realise that Iwas being paranoid now becuse it felt like somebody was watching me. I get up and make sure that the curtains are closed completely around the sides of my window. That's one thing about me, I hate sleeping with an open window or door. As i draw the curtains closer together, i heard the strangest sound. It was almost like a growl, however it was unlike any other grown i had ever heard. I jump back in bed, quickly, because my heart was starting to race.
After half an hour of lying in bed staring at the cieling i reluctantly realise that i wouldnt be sleeping anytime soon. I sigh. I still hear a faint growling but i decide that there must be a stray dog in the park two blocks over from my house.
Then i'm no longer able to move. I start to panic, trying desperatly to move my arms and legs. A dim light starts shining into my room from under and above my bedroom door. The door opens, slowly and quietly, and a dark figure aproaches from the other side. I watch as the person moves their arm to switch on the light. I gsp when i recognise the boy my sister was hanging off of on the bus.
"I think you've got the wrong room." I say coldly.
"No, I do not. I have just the girl I wanted, and she can't even move a muscle." He looks around. "By the way, my names Dean."
"I'll be sure to let Kenzie know you visited." Are the sarcastic words my mouth tells him.
"Oh dont worry, she doesnt even know my name. She was just a little fling so i could get what i want now." Dean says rudely.
"You're not getting anything from me."
"Oh, but thats where youre wrong. You see, you're not who you think you are. Why do you think you look nothing like the rest of your family? It's obviously that they have none of the same genes as you at all."
"Shut up. You have no idea what you're talking about." I try to gesture to the rest of the house, and findthat i still cannot move. "The people in the other rooms in this house are a part of my famly."
"Not by blood."
"Blood desnt matter. The people who love me the most and would do anything for me are my family."
Dean looked shoced for a second, but recovered quickly. "So you already know about how you were adoted?"
"I had a feeling. I look like nobody else in my family, i dont even act like most of them. And i still dont know for suree if im adopted, because how am i supposed to believe you? You just broke into my house and you must have given me some kind of drug earlier to make it so i couldnt move."
"Is that so? A drug you say?"
"Wait just a moment! The drug you gave me, did it make me think that the floor was shaking this morning?"
"There is no drug." He sighed. "I would have thought that you would have realised it by now. The world is not what you think it is Abby. And by being adopted, you dont even know who, or what, you are."
"What do you mean, 'what' i am? I'm a 15 year old canadian girl who is getting pretty damn annoyed at the guy who just broke ito my bedroom!"
"Youre full canadian, and mostly human, but you also have a different kind of blood running through your viens. Your parents went through great leangths to hide what you are from us. But we have ways, ways to find things like you."
"What are you talking about?" I whisper.
"Your mom is a Furten, Abby."
"What the hell is a Furten?"
"Its a human with supernatural blood running through their viens. As a Furten matures, unusual things happen to the world around them. They notice things the rest of the world doesnt. They need to see things to believe them. They dont believe the normal human religion, they dont believe the legends, they need proof for everything, they can do things with their minds, all sorts of things thats unnatural to the human mind."
"But how could i be a Furten? Like, me, of all people, the one with the unnatural blood."
"Because you're my sister. I've been looking for you."
