* Prologue *
I woke up to the sun shining through my tiny bedroom window. I hopped out of my bed and started getting dressed for the day ahead. On the way downstairs, I rammed my knuckles against Jake's door and yelled, "Jake! Wake up now! I am not being late today!" I didn't stop long enough to hear if he replied and raced the rest of the way down the stairs and into the kitchen. Checking the clock on the wall I quickly grabbed two eggs, cracked them, and dropped them into the pan. While waiting for the eggs to fry, I packed all the things I would need for the coming day. "Jake! Hurry up" At the same time that he appeared at the bottom of the stairs.
"What's with the hurry?"
I turned to look at him. My friend, Jess, always said that he was cute. But looking at him with his bed hair and still half asleep, I couldn't disagree more.
"Get down here now! And eat this egg fast because I am leaving the moment I finish eating and I am not waiting for you."
He grumbled but didn't argue. He would have lost the argument anyways. I was stubborn. "Like your mother always was," my dad would always say. I shook my head to get my dad's voice out of my head. I didn't need the reminder of his death on a day like this. I shoveled down my eggs quickly and ran out the door, the same time that an old Toyota Camry pulled up on the sidewalk. I threw my bag into the car and climbed in. "What is Jake doing? Why is he taking so long?!"
"Well good morning to you, too little sis."
Zack, my big brother sat in the driver's seat, grinning happily at me. He was the optimist of the family. Dad always said a family wouldn't work if there wasn't an optimist. In our family, Zack was it. I looked him over thoroughly. He always boasted that he was the hottest guy at his school before he graduated. And all my girl friends agree. I guess it was due to the fact of our genes that both my brothers were "hot" (as my friends put it). I was the only one in the family that seemed to have inherited some random person's genes. Lucky me.
I barely had time to reply to his greeting before Jack jumped into the car. And I mean literally jumped in. Jack's dream is to be a freerunner. Ever since he was young he would jump over things instead of going around them. He was pretty good from what I have seen. He practices with his team every week.
My passion is dancing. I love, love, love dancing. All types of dance I loved. Which is exactly why this day was so important to me. Today was the audition for the Back to School Showcase for juniors. Ever since my parents' death a few months ago, the school has notified me that my tuition has only been paid up until the end of first semester which means that I can no longer attend the academy after the first semester. That news added on with the news about our parents' death was just too much.
I still remember that day when we got the phone call from Zack telling us that he was coming to pick us up and that our parents were in the hospital. That was the only time I didn't hear happiness in Zack's voice. People usually say that the wait was always the worst part. Except that there was no wait for us. The moment we got in, the doctor confirmed if we were family and told us that our parents had died on the way to the hospital on the ambulance. That was all, there was no comfort in his voice. I guess after having to deliver such bad news to so many patients, you learn to steel yourself against your emotions. I wish I could do that.
I still miss my parents so much, but they always said, "You can't change what's in the past, so don't let it bother you. Instead, look to the future and see all the happiness that awaits you." After their death I have really taken what they said to heart. So now, instead of turning into a messed up teenager because of their deaths, I have decided to continue my life as before.
As a final performance at the academy, I was planning to do a dance to honor my parents and I loved how it turned out. During this dance was going to dance out all my feelings about my parents, which is why it is so important that I actually get into the showcase.
