Stepping off the path she walked up to the brick wall that separated the orchard from the rest of the town. Clutching the carefully folded piece of paper close to her heart she followed the wall down a ways to where a stray tree was growing. One day it would be a fine large tree but for today it was just a sappling and the only witness as the girl felt along the wall for the loose brick. Carefully she removed the brick and set it aside. She looked down at the paper clutched in her hand and whispered "I love you" as she kissed it and placed it in the gap in the wall and then replaced the brick. Only one other would ever know to look here for her message, and somehow she knew some day, he would return and find the message, and he would understand.

After replacing the brick the girl crouched down to her knees and whispered to the tree with watering eyes.

"Watch over this place little one."

Closing her eyes for a moment, one tear escaped before she wiped her eyes, abruptly rose, and ran back the way she came, turning her back on the place before she lost the strength to leave.

The growing tree soaked up the tear from the ground as the girl shrank in the distance. The girl's appointment of the tree as a guardian changed that place of many memories forever. Never would anyone know what happened there, but all would always sense the special air of the place; the pain and joy connected to it.
