To Burn or Not To Burn

"You're supposed to kill them by burning them."

"You ass, you kill them with a stake to the heart!"

Cas heaved a sigh at his brothers.

Raindrops beat down against the glass of their bedroom window, casting long dancing shadows along every item in sight. Thunder growled in the distance, threatening, like a dog warning you to stay away. Days usually played out as such in that town, under those clouds. Days that made it impossible to go outside, impossible to walk to the diner down the road, impossible to drink lemonade on the porch. They had to make their own fun while John slept away, his bones weary and his heart numb.

And on perhaps the thirty-fifth game of Speed, Dean smugly proclaimed, "I'm gonna stake you to the wall like a vampire if you lose another round!"

Sam had looked at Dean, glancing warily at Cas before looking back at the eldest.

"You don't stake vampires, Dean."

"Yes you do."

"No, you cut them up and burn them."

And Cas was suddenly embarrassed for Sam.

"You do not cut them up and burn them, Sammy! That's freakin' stupid.

They'd been bickering for a few minutes before Dean looked up at Cas.

"What do you think, huh? Who's right??"

They had both leaped from the floor onto Cas' bed, and they stared at him expectantly, inching in to gauge his expression.

Sam's lips were pressed into an angry line, Dean's puckered with disdain and conviction. Cas slowly slid down behind his book, not daring to utter a word. If he took Sam's side, he would feel the wrath of Dean and be pelted with pranks for a week. If he took Dean's side, Sam would look at him with those big hazel eyes of his that would dig into Cas' heart and make him feel guilty forever.

There was only one safe road to take.

"I-I don't know," Cas squeaked.

Dean threw his arms into the air in defeat, and Sam rolled his eyes with a sigh. They fell back onto the wooden floor, their card game forgotten and the dreary rain temporarily masked.
