It was early morning. The sun was slowly rising over the horizon. The birds were chirping without a care as their bodies became warmer with the golden rays that were peeking through the branches. 10 year old Amelia Dawson was asleep in her bed dreaming of a fantasy world that was all her own, but would soon be forgotten shortly after she got up. Amelia's mother, Sylvia Dawson, was moving around in the kitchen making breakfast for her daughter. She was lost in thought. Thinking of the broadcasts that has been going on for weeks warning everyone in the country. Something big was coming, and they didn't know if it was friendly.

Around 7:30 little Amelia was stirring in her sleep. She wriggled around in her bed. Her black hair sticking up at odd places and a red mark could be seen on her cheek. Eyes half open she glanced toward her nightstand and sighed when she read the time. She groggily got up from her bed and waddled down the hallway towards the kitchen where she heard noises.

She rubbed her eyes looking around and spotted her mother at the stove. She walked towards her and hugged her hips. "Hi sweetie. What are you doing up so early?" Sylvia glanced down at her sleepy child. Amelia gave her a shrug and glanced up at her mother. "Why don't you go get into the shower and then we can eat some breakfast? How does that sound?" Sylvia smiled at Amelia. "Ok." Was the half asleep response she got before Amelia walked away.

Amelia walked back into her room and grabbed clothes for the day, a simple red t-shirt with a pair of black leggings. She made her way into the bathroom and stood on top of the stool her mother had bought her a few years ago. Looking into the mirror she grimaced at the sight. Her long black hair was now about shoulder length instead of mid back due to knots all throughout her head. The red mark on her face in the shape of her hand, which she glanced at to see dried up drool on it. She grabbed her hair brush and quickly pulled it through her hair, wincing when it got stuck in some stubborn knots. After her hair was brushed out, she undressed and got into the shower.

During her shower she didn't hear the radio going off, giving off another warning, but her mother did. This time the message was different. It told everyone to get somewhere safe and hidden. Warning her that whatever being was coming wasn't friendly and was very lethal. Sylvia was panicking. She quickly started packing away things that she knew her and Amelia would need. She just prayed that she had enough time.

Stepping out of the shower Amelia smiled listening to the birds outside of her window. They were flying and enjoying the sun and bathing in the small bird bath she helped her set up for them. She dried off and quickly got dressed, making her way towards the kitchen to eat the breakfast her mom made. Seeing her favorite pink plate on the table she quickly took a seat and started eating, glancing around every now and then to try and see where her mother went. She glanced up from her plate as she heard her radio get louder and listened.

"To anyone who's listening. Pack your bags, get as much food and water as you can. They're coming for us and we are not safe. This isn't a drill." The messaged repeated two more times before Amelia understood it. She dropped her fork in shock. Everything around her froze."Momma!" Amelia shouted out, scared by the message. Sylvia rushed out of her room towards her child and sighed in relief when she saw she wasn't in danger. "Amelia?" Sylvia questioned with concern as she noticed the frightened look on her face. "What did that man mean? He said we had to get safe." Amelia glanced up at her mother. "Something's coming my little Amy. It's not safe anymore, so we need to pack our things and get somewhere safe." Sylvia tried her best to explain.

The birds were no longer chirping. The golden rays of the sun could no longer be seen peeking through the windows of the Dawson's home. It was obscured by an by the curtains that had been recently closed. "Come on. Let's go get your stuff all packed." Sylvia handed a bag to her daughter and Amelia was quick to get on her feet, rushing into her room. Amelia stuffed as much clothes that she could into the duffel bag before rushing to her toy box and grabbing her favorite stuffed animal, Barry. Barry was a lion that her father had given her the night she was born. She's kept it ever since.

"Amelia! Come on we have to get going!" Amelia made her way out of her room and into the living room where her mother was waiting for her. "All set?" Sylvia asked running her hand through Amelia's hair. "Yeah." Amelia nodded. The two paused as the radio crackled to life again. The announcer sounding panicked and out of breath.

"Get your stuff packed, and get the heck outta dodge. Whatever is coming... It's big and dangerous. The President of the United States has gone down. The military's are depleting. There's no more help for us. This is Cameron Surgent. Signing off, for the very last time. I wish you all luck."
The broadcast turned to static and Sylvia knew it was time to go. Sirens were going off all around. Explosions could be seen in the distance through the windows. Sylvia grabbed Amelia's hand and rushed towards the front door hoping to make it outside without either of them getting hurt. When she reached the door something banged against it. Sylvia quickly placed Amelia behind her and slowly made her way towards the door.

Sylvia and Amelia looked up into the eyes of a monster. "Mom!" Amelia let out a shocked scream as her mother stood there her mouth opened in a silent scream. No sound was coming out of Sylvia's mouth. The only sounds that could be heard was the sound of bombs in the distance, Amelia's cries and then a thud of a body hitting the ground.
