The smell of hand sanitizer and plastics filled my nostrils as I rushed through the hospital doors.
"Where is she?" I yelled to no one in particular; I just hoped somebody would know.
After no one answered me, I ran over to the receptionist. I was greeted by the same nasally voice as I have been every day for the past three years.
"Hello, who are you here to see?" She droned, not even bothering to look up.
"You know who I'm here to see, but where's Susan?"
The lady pondered, probably thinking if there were any staff with that name.
"I don't know a..."
"My mum!" I interrupted impatiently. "You've seen her before: short brown hair, wears glasses, usually comes in with me."
"I... I think I saw her walk past earlier... Let me check the..."
Before she couldn't finish, I started running straight towards the life machine department.
I ran to room 0A2, a room I was familiar with for all the wrong reasons. Through the window, I could see my mum talking to a doctor with many feelings visible on her face.
"Stop Mum!" I yelled as I threw the door open, "give her more time!"
"I have given her time, three years!" She yelled, turning to face me with tears rolling down her pale face, "But I can't afford it anymore! Do you know how expensive life machines are to run?"
"I'll pay, take it out of my college fund, I don't care anymore!" I screamed, tears now running down my face too.
"Can you hear yourself? Are you really willing to through away your future to pay for her to just lie there for another year? What if she doesn't wake up? Then neither of you will have a future."
"But...”
"Don't you think I know all this? Don't you think I've thought of every possibility? Yes, it's your little sister; but it's my daughter I'm killing!" She screamed "I've come here and seen her and all she does is remind me of that day!"
"So that's all she is?" I questioned, shocked. "All she is, is a reminder to you, a burden, a scar?"
