Writing Prompt #1

It is the end of the universe. God and Lucifer stand before the last human being. You are the first neutral soul who is neither good nor evil enough to pass into an Afterlife and thus must be judged personally. Unknown to them, you are Death and have come for them instead.

Death approached the two figures. One in blinding light and the other in soothing darkness.

Death smiled. Lucifer pestered God incessantly, nudging and smiling, while God ignored him with a immortal patience. Always and forever, they had.

But they never accounted for whom died, as Death did. Lucifer collected the sinful, and God, the righteous. In Death's knowledge, Lucifer was the one whom had fallen in love, and God was risen above it all in purity. Lucifer, so unafraid of the love that howled at him, was willing to depth into the realm of evil so that God could stay in the light. Despite Lucifer's wishes, Lucifer has given into God's demands to stay away- mostly. Lucifer was obedient. Holding onto what Death whispered in his ear- that the living lived only so long. But God was persistent. Taking after Life, wanting the goodness of not the humans, but what the beast humanity has named itself after. To feed on that lie that humans are better.

Even as Death approached the two, they did not see. Too far gone was Lucifer gazing at God. The shrouded darkness reaching to his light like ink dispersing in water. And despite God's upturned face, his light reached towards the darkness. The darkness feeds the light as the light searches for it's polar. The two cannot live without the other though both act upon differently.

Death knelt before God and Lucifer. The former smiled down at him. Lawful order shown through those blazing eyes. Indeed, God had created man in his favor. God shown his radiance with the key of Heaven held out in his palm. So trusting. So giving and agape. But Lucifer watched Death closely. Uneasy about the slight tremor of where Death knelt. Uneasy about Death's existence as it lived along his love, Life.

But Life was no longer. The universe's had shuttered as Life gave it's last breath. The Earth crumble in on itself. So now Death is the only thing that is left. Succumbed to the stillness and silence when Life left. Death had nowhere to go. It missed Life.

So this is where Death had come to die.

Death trembled at the prospect of seeing Life again. Down, down, down in the abyss of nothing.

God asked Death where he believes he belongs. Death said that he did not know. He was everything and yet nothing.

I search- search of what I cannot have, said Death. Lucifer asked what Death valued most.

Life said Death. God touched Death's face and Death looked up.

Sadness had drained Death of tears. Despair had struck it's being. Desperation of another raped Death of it's need to survive.

God felt for Death. Death could feel it. God opened it's holy mouth and tried to speak. But it could not. Death glared up at God. God was what destroyed Life. It who had taken all what Death valued. Life. And Death was bitter.

Even as Death readied itself to smite out the divine being it hated so, Death saw Life too. The radiant culture and worn love Life gave Death everyday. Death saw the grace God gave the things it loved, as Life protected those it cared for. Death even saw the teachings Life taught God. Too much. Too much was this being as the one it had once dreamt of avenging.

Death could not do it.

Death bled tears onto the floor, ripping to and fro from itself. The fury of its weakness howled at Death like the empty night winds. It wanted so much- had nothing, and was everything.

God cowered back behind Lucifer. Lucifer drew a blade as to displace the creature that threatened his world- God. Death saw how Lucifer thought of God as Death with Life.

Death, it whispered. Horror and fear masked Lucifer until even Death could not recognize the wild, willful, beautiful apprentice he had once influenced.

I have not come for you but for what you offer me. Death could not raise its head.

What would Lucifer offer you? God was cleansing the place Death held him. Until God was once again holy. God would not find the compassion Life showed Death.

Only the chance to see the one I love most.

And whom would that be, Death Devourer of Souls? Lucifer reached for God, still behind its being.

Life.

You are Death. What do you know of Life?

Once, Death and Lucifer hated Life. For what it held in its prosperous palm. But Lucifer turned to God, pain and exasperation lining its immortal face.

I know enough to wish gone of myself. Death would not stay much longer. Its mortal body was sleeping on the last and first land of man. That wonderfully horrible place Death destroyed. But the body was stirring, and Death needed to go.

You are not of the dead. Lucifer pondered.

Of course! I am Death you demon! Lucifer flushed a slightly mortal sight and opened its sensuous mouth. The mortal body of Death slipped.

The empty world of what once was Life, and loved by Death, was empty. Death did not want to wake up to it now.

Please, Death gripped Lucifer's hand. It had to go. It had to! I beg of you, Lucifer- save me mercy! Lucifer held God behind it. God growled at Lucifer, then pushed past it.

Why do you want to go, Death? God went to the same level as Death.

I was in love. God laughed. Death and Lucifer blinked at the same time.

You are Death! If you wished to go, then go! We can do nothing for or against it!

I am Death. I cannot walk guide both myself and my mortal body through the gates.

Then I grant you leave, Death. God blinked at Death. Lucifer glanced at God.

But Death was already fading. An emptiness graced away from it.

Death fell sleepy. As the mortal body felt heavy when the sun bowed. Death let go as the mortal did.

Life beamed at Death as it arose out of the ashes. But it was not bright. It was dark. Lonely. Life frowned as she realized what Death saw.

Immortality has an end. It left a long time ago. Was all Life said. Welcome, Love.
