The ballroom was bright with thousands of flickering candles hanging on the exquisite gigantic silver chandelier above and on many candle holders, also silver, on the finely papered walls. Guests filled the room to the point of suffocation, but no one seemed to complain. They were all enjoying themselves, dancing, drinking, eating and the most important of all--gossiping.

Nadine was on top of her world. In the arms of her fiancee, Daniel, she circled the room, greeting their friends and his family's guests. Her dress of simple yet expensive midnight blue satin over lighter blue tulle decorated with flowery embroidery was in the height of fashion which her father had spent exorbitant amount for his beloved daughter. The dress was just appropriate for the occasion. Tonight her engagement with Daniel was to be announced formally. It took Daniel almost six month to convince her parents, a nobleman by birth to accept the fact that he loved Nadine.

Born to a middle-class, but rich merchant family, Nadine was beautiful and thoroughly educated in manners and many qualifications as befitted to a young woman. But bloodlines always came between her and any young Lords who wished to court her. Daniel had by far the strongest character of all her suitors, who was willing to stand up and defend her in front of his parents. That was why she loved him so deeply and was prepared to give anything to be his wife. Including surrendering herself to him even before they had parental consent.

"My love, will you excuse me while I greet my father's cousin and his family who just came from the New World. I will introduce you in a moment," Daniel whispered to her ear in his most sensual manner.

"Oh, yes of course," she blinked to calm her suddenly jolting heart every time she felt his breath caressing her ear.

"Will you be all right? Shall I send one of my friends to take care of you in my absence?"

"No, no, there's no need. I'll be fine. I think I"ll take a walk in the garden and get some fresh air outside."

"That would be wonderful. I can see you're looking quite pale already." Daniel smiled and pulled her into his embrace and kissed her deeply before leaving.

She sighed in content and went out to the ggarden. For a moment she was lost in the beauty of the decorated garden. Chinese lamps lit every path. Flowers were blooming wafting pleasant fragrance about the air.Comfortable garden chairs were placed discreetly for couples to sit and converse in solitude.

Nadine had walked to the end of the garden when a servant wearing a black and white livery with polished buttons approached. He bowed respectfully and said,

"Excuse me, Miss, His Lordship sends for you. If you will follow me, I will take you to him."

His Lordship? What did Daniel's father want with me? Puzzled, she followed the footman. She became even more confused when he lead us not inside the house to the study where the head of the house habitually sat, but outside!

On the far end of the street there was a closed carriage. A black simple one with no decorations or any visible coat-of-arm. The footman opened the door and motioned her to come closer. She poked her head inside, curious as to why her future father in law should choose a bizzare place to speak to her.

Then suddenly she was pushed inside. The door slammed close and the carriage started with a jolt. She tried the door and it was locked. The windows were barred tight she had no way to see where they were going and nobody outside could see inside the coach as well.

Nadine banged at the carriage walls and roof demanding to stop. She screamed as loud as she could, but no one seemed to hear her. Until she exhausted herself and passed out on the old padded seat.

She woke hours later to find herself tied, a sack was enveloping her head, being carried on a man's shoulder. She struggled to try to free herself, but she was a no match to the man's strength. Not long until she was put in the pirate captain's cabin, being seduced and forced to accept his attention.
