By the time I got back to the house it was almost none and the clouds had cleared. I noticed my grandmother in the garden. In all the years I had come here I had never seen her work in the garden or have ever seen a single blooming flower in it.
As I walked up I saw she had dozens of flowers waiting to be planted.
"Need some help?" I asked inspecting the flowers she had bought. They felt fragile under my grasp and it made me think of the flower on the table at the cafe.
"Oh, if you would like to sweetie. I have Chase here to help me but we can always use some extra hands."
"We need to talk about Chase, Grandma." I whispered sharply.
She looked at me with a glare that was very serious. "You should listen to what that boy has to say. He is the one person you should trust most, Sutton." she snapped back to planting the flowers as soon as Chase arrived at the front doorway with two glasses of water in his hand.
"If I had known you were here I would have gotten you a glass. I can go back and get one for you?" he said smiling at me. His smile reminded me of how perfect he was. I found myself making excuses for his strange story he had told me before. It was hard not to when his smile made his eyes brighten. His smile gave everything around him more contrast. It was a beautiful action.
"Sutton?"
"Yeah?"
"Do you want a glass of water?" he said laughing a little. Oh shit he had asked me that already hadn’t he. I just spaced out while staring at him. I felt so embarrassed and hoped my grandmother didn’t notice.
"Oh no that fine I can get one myself." I said quickly and hurried inside.
I got a snack in the kitchen, changed my clothes, and then went back out to help my grandmother and Chase plant flowers. The garden was in the front of the house on the sides. There was a black gate surrounding it. There were vines growing up the walls and flowerbeds surrounding the side of the house. The rest was a bright green grass that had died around the edges of the garden. I got to work helping my grandma prepare more space for the flowers to be planted.
After a little more than half of the flowers were planted my grandmother left the rest to me and Chase so she could go to the store before it got dark.
Chase dug the holes and I planted the flowers. We were getting the job done fast but did not say a word to each other. Halfway through digging a hole Chase stopped and looked at me.
"I’m sorry about the way I acted yesterday. I know I should have waited to tell you all of that but I don’t want you to get hurt." he said softly without breaking his gaze.
I could feel my face heating up and I looked down quickly at the blue flower in my hand before he could tell that I was blushing. I looked up as he sat down in the dirt by the hole he was digging. He ran his hand over his forehead and studied the ground. The air between us seemed to be electric. I looked at him sitting there. He seemed small and I wished I knew what to say to him but I had nothing.
He looked up as I opened my mouth to say that it was okay because that all I could think to say but the words got caught and nothing came out. His eyes pierced into me, waiting for me to say something to ease the silence.
"It’s okay." The words came out as a whisper. Saying them aloud seemed to invade the silence.
With that he stood up and got back to digging the holes. I got back to planting. We finished soon and went inside.
It was dark by the time I finished making the mac and cheese. Chase had chosen a movie to watch and I scooped out the cheesy diner into two bowls and sat on the couch. We sat on opposite sides of the couch in the first part of the movie but it started to get cold and he had the only blanket.
"It’s cold" I said hoping he would pass the blanket over but instead he just looked at me and smiled.
"I guess we’ve got to share then." He shifted to the middle of the couch and I scooted beside him.
He put his arm around me and I found that my head rested perfectly in the crest of this shoulder. His heat seeped through my body and touching him gave me an electric feeling. We never talked for the rest of the movie. When the credits started rolling we still sat there, motionless.
The TV went black.
He was the one who broke the silence first.
"Do you remember watching that as kids together? You always said you hated it because-"
"Because no one falls in love" I finished for him.
