The Bird With No Wings

She used to fly high above everyone else
And be able to look down at everyone
She used to be able to soar above the clouds
But now her wings have been cut off

Everyone used to look up at her
But now they look down at her
Trying to understand how someone so strong, so beautiful, so high could get so low
How a Queen in her own right could fall from grace
But they could never understand.

They could never understand
That she lost the will to fly
The will to be strong
Because they were never the bird with no wings
They had never lost something so precious to them.

She was the bird with no wings
And while everyone smiled to her face
They would talk about her as soon as her back was turned
They thought she didn't hear them
But she did.

She heard them call her pathetic, unworthy, ungraceful, a disgrace to society
And every word felt like knives going into her back
She tried to ignore them and say they just don't understand.

They didn't understand that every word drove a nail farther into the coffin she was already in
How she already had one foot in the grave and every hurtful phrase made her want just dive in
How could they?
For they had never been the bird with no wings.

All she wanted to do was just give up
But if she did, she'd just be giving them what they wanted
They wanted her to be small
To never fly again
Because they could never understand.

That one day she could be gone
And no one would miss her
Because everything she'd done would be forgotten
Because she was the bird with no wings.

But something inside her told her not to give up
To fight for the will to fly again
For the right to soar above the clouds
So she could be the bird with no wings that flies once more.
