The town of Fantome was inspired by some of the quiet mountain towns here in South Carolina. The difference being that these towns are a little nicer than Fantome, and you won't get turned into a dog for trying to leave! (Quick shoutout to my mom, who came up with the idea of calling the town Fantome.)
I'd also like to mention that the spider scene came from my own fear of spiders. I really don't like those things! On a nicer note, the night sky really is beautiful out in the wilderness. I based that scene on a night when I went camping with my family.
