Had to pull my sheets over my head when Mindy's alarm clock went on wildly then the others’ alarm clocks followed through the thin walls, piercing into my thick skull.
Peering into my phone, 4:00, it says. I had to blink twice to take in the things I was excited since earlier. This is my first day in office!
With adrenaline shooting in my body, I jump down my double-deck bed grabbed my towel and soap case and run as fast as I can to the public toilet.
Life in dorm is not too great other than walking distance from your work or school. I had to take my words into action and now I’m here in a bathroom that measures close to one meter by two. Thankfully majority of my dorm mates are sane enough and are also responsible enough. The smell of antiseptic is strong since I am the first one to use it.
“Keira” a voice frets from the corner of the door, I can sense panic in her voice as she called me again.
“Hold it in for a little longer” I said, hurrying on scrubbing myself then splashing.
“How long?” I think she’s about to jump a little, the effort of holding a pee is not a great perk either for a dorm living.
“Can you hold the door for me?” she pleads when she sees me opening the door. She holds her pajamas tightly on its garter. I bet she’s ready to spill.
“Be quick” I said then she hops in.
“Thank you!” she yells my cue.
My adrenaline subsides, and it always surprises me to how it shortens the narrow hall from my room to the bathroom.
“Nice time!” Darla crows from the first door next to the bathroom. She is a college student
“Good luck for your first day!” another head appears from the side of Darla.
“Thanks” I smile.
“It’s not even her first day Gail. She started just a month ago. Don’t be stupid” Darla turns to face Irene.
“Oh you fool, it’s her first official day” I smile at how good Irene retorts back at her.
Trotting to my room back, Mindy’s up already combing her straight hair down her hips, her crown.
“What do you plan for your first day?” she asks noticing me wrapped on my towel.
“I don’t know, maybe just tie it all up or put on a headband.”
The awkward conversation about my hair has been one of the icebreakers between us. We had known each other since my first year in college. I think my hair is one of her priority, third-rated priorities.
“What do you think?” I asked her from behind my cabinet door. She knows I welcome her opinions, after all she knows me like how her sister knows me.
“I know you want to be simple, but not on your first day.” I had rolled my eyes on this.
“You know it is not my first day, I just don’t want to be bothered on making my hair looking good every day.”
“Do you want to be fired?”
“What’s that got to do with my work?” I ask a bit surprised. This is my first job after graduating from management.
