Pria Rungóntü is a fighter-in-training for the Resistance against the Eleynian empire. After years of being held back by injuries and illness, Pria finally has her chance to shine as the skilled swordsman she is.
But when the Elder returns home early from a Recruitment Excursion, the unexpected guest he brings with him causes a stir in the campground.
One of the men is wearing crimson robes. It is the color of the Magi.
But that cannot be so, because the Magi are not real. Are they? The embroidery around his collar is gold, a color typically reserved for royalty, for the Emperor and his family. While both of these things are unsettling, it is not nearly as unsettling as what lay atop his head.
In a world where every man and woman wears their hair long as a sign of spiritual connectivity to the Goddess, this man's shaved head is blasphemy . . .
After an attack on the town of Gaeris threatens to turn Pria into a martyr, this red-clad stranger runs to her aid. She is presumed dead just before the stranger uses a strange red glow to revive her.
The result of her resurrection? Pria is now the second-to-last living Magi in the world.
The cost? Half his soul.
