I woke up to the unfamiliar feel of loneliness. My ultimate enemy settled into my brain resting there like it was a permanent stay.I looked around the guest room. I immediately got up after my quick scan and rushed to what used to be Brandon and It's shared room. I yanked all my t shirts off the hangers feverishly. I ripped the dresses and bottoms out of the dresser drawers. My makeup and other bathroom necessities weren't longer in my taken part of the cabinets. Everything was packed for my final escape, but I still couldn't face reality. My mind went back to the day Brandon and I first moved in with each other. I knew I should have just gotten a dorm room it would have saved me the trouble that is staring me right in the face right now. My mind floated to an alternative, a soothing distraction. Coffee and a scrumptious treat from the local cafe, Barbendos.
As I walked in I could smell the freshly brewed coffee. The waft of cinnamon greeted my distracted mind like an old friend.
"Kristy?" I heard a sweet sounding Texan voice say. I turned around to see one of my friends, Mindy. She was quite a chatterbox the last time I had seen her and from then way her mouth never closed I could tell she still was one.
I had finally slipped in a "hey Mindy." I had said it with a hidden bit of disappointment luring on the bottom of my tongue. I had came to Barbendos to be alone in the relaxing environment. I crossed my fingers as she ordered her coffee that she was just going to be in and then out as soon as she got her coffee. My wish was fulfilled within great timing.
As I grabbed my steaming coffee, I scanned the room for an empty secluded area. I had decided while waiting for my coffee that I would tell my parents the news. Honestly I had a slight thought that they would take it harder than I had. My parents loved and practically worshipped Brandon. The guy was studying to become a doctor for Pete sake who's parents does that not win over. My parents were the basic half strict, half loose type. Futures were extremely important to them, but they didn't want me to go about my life thinking what would have happened idiot had more experiences when I was younger. I can honestly say I have never asked that question.
As the phone started to ring I started to relax. I'm making a big deal out of absolutely nothing. I broke up with somebody I didn't sign up for the CIA and murder someone or anything. No seriously I didn't.
"Hello, Mrs.Brown speaking who is this?" My moms sweet motherly voice bursted out of the phone welcoming me like I was entering our sweet ranch style home.
"Hey mom, it's Kristy." I said releasing a deep breath
"Hey honey, is something wrong, we rarely get a call from you at this time." Her voice turned into concern. I usually only called during the night time when something big had happened to me.
"Mom, Brandon and I broke up." The situation of who broke up with who wasn't entirely the main topic.
"Oh sweetie I am so sorry." I could hear she wasn't just sorry for me, but also for herself.
"Excuse me is this seat taken." A deep, soothing, melody full voice voiced behind me. As I turned I saw a tall, brown eyed stranger. A handsome one as well. My breath caught in my throat as I tried to regain my focus. I shaked it off and immediately went to the old me. The one that didn't give really any care to guys.
"Ummm mom I will have to call you back later." I pulled the phone away from my ear and ended the call while implying that the gentleman could sit at his decided spot.
"Hi my name is Daniel I saw you sitting alone and I thought maybe you might like some company, you also looked quite upset, everything ok?" His eyes never left mine you could tell he was trustworthy and honest. It was honestly creepy like I had a feeling I could tel him everything as if he were a best friend I had seen only the week before. His eyes I noticed were a light coffee brown until the sunlight left them. Then they were a deep chocolate brown. The sunshine brought a tint of green to outline his eyes a fact you couldn't just look over.
"Ya I actually was just talking to my mom."
"Figured when you said mom I will have to call you back later." He said causing a quiet giggle to pop from my mouth.
"Ya I guess that was a spoiler." I said with a smirk. I immediately recalled what I had just done. I'm talking to a complete stranger like he seriously was my brother. I never act this way I usually try to figure people out just a little bit before I ever become all.. well me around them.
We talked for what seemed forever and I felt like we were actually becoming close friends.
"So what's your favorite color?" I asked him curiously wondering if it would be a short simple red, blue, or purple. Or even a descriptive shade like Lavender, Turquoise, Beige.
"Yellow. Here's the reason." He started to lean over the table and while he told me he moved his hands around and around like he was constructing a big puppet show on strings.
"The color is bright, bold, and out there. It brightens up your day with a nice ray of sunshine while delivering the pain of sunburns in disguise. The color screams be happy, but also kinda makes people disgusted with it's optimistic message because people don't think of the positive outcomes in a difficult situation. It's a color that is actually more than color its a statement, a message, and a nice way to piss people off." He leaned back in the booth supporting his head with his hands crossed behind his head. He smiled as if he just discovered a cure for cancer.
I was honestly amazed that was a true amazing answer. More than just one word or even an out of this world color. It was a explanation of the color through his eyes that made you see behind the facts.
As time rushed by I still did have time to check my watch. It was already 3 p.m.
"I have to go I'm sorry, but we can talk some other time." I said while slipping the paper full of 10 numbers into my pocket.
"Wait before you go I wanted to ask you something." He stood up and I realized that he was tall, but not a towering sort of tall it was more of a cute tall guy thing. I mean until I actually stood up straight. Then he was just tall enough that my forehead reached his nose. I blame my mom for never telling me to sit up straight.
"Would you like to go out on a date with me?" He ran his fingers through his hair pushing it more back.
"No." I started to walk away.
"Wait no?" He sounded astonished, but I really had to leave.
"Just got out of a relationship remember why on't you try that waitress she looks free." I pointed towards a snobby makeup cake face woman in her mind 30's.
As I exited the welcome feeling of the cafe a wet single drop wet my lower eyelash. Then another brisked my scarf. Then another came and another and another. Out of nowhere a rainstorm had developed. The realization that I had nowhere to stay hit me like lightning. Thankfully it was just a metaphor.
As I grunted I started to panic. No way could I sleep out in the rain when it was practically starting to rain, not dogs and cats, but cows and elephants.
"Ya know you told me you don't have a place to stay maybe I could give you one." The voice that had dulled the speed of time voiced behind me.
"Ya, ya sure." I said it without a moments thought. Next thing I knew we were in his car driving to Brandon's house to collect my stuff.
And this is how I made my biggest mistake without a care in the world.
