It was the end of my first week at college, I'd survived but my supply of clothes had not. I had done laundry on my own before at home but very sparingly. Mom usually did load after load while I was the the one to fold it all and place piles in everyone's respective rooms. I knew how my washer worked at home but not a clue how college laundry machines worked. So I set apart a decent chunk of my time on the weekend to go and figure it all out.
I lugged my laundry basket down the flights of stairs in my dorm building only to reach the bottom floor of rooms.
Oh great, I thought, I don't even know where I'm going!
So I did what any lost college girl would do and I started to wander around the building which turned out to include a lot more stairs than I had originally anticipated. Eventually I got tired of stairs and took a break form wandering around and put my basket down. Scrolling through my phone hoping maybe I can find a building map online I'm startled by a custodian who asks me if I need any help.
Where were you ten minutes ago kind sir!? I cheer in my head as he gives me directions to the laundry room in the basement of the building. I take the final left at the bottom of the stairs to an admittedly creepy hallway.
Turns out I'm the nerd who does laundry on a Saturday instead of go party like everyone else because I'm the only one here. But at least this way I don't embarrass myself for not knowing what I'm doing and I don't have to wait for a machine to free up.
I start to separate my whites and delicates from my darks and colors and then another for my shower towels. I load up three machines and follow the little poster of instructions thank god for directions
Once everything is loaded and paid, a ridiculous amount of quarters for. I take a seat in one of the chairs they have set up with a desk in case someone wanted to work while their laundry was going. My guess is most people just set timers on their phones and came back later. But me being the nervous freshman I am I stay and wait for my washing to be done so I can transfer it over to a dryer.
I probably should have gone back to my room and gotten some of my homework but after all those stairs while wandering around before I was just too lazy so I pull out my phone and scroll through everything social media seven times over. As I'm about to go through Twitter for the eighth time I notice someone else enter the laundry room. A boy. He notices me look up and casually smiles which I happily return and then go back to my two new tweets on my timelines from the last two minutes.
I keep flipping on my phone as I hear faint grumbles coming from the boy in the room with me and ignore them until I hear a hushed,
"...shit..."
I look up at the boy and see him trying to clean up the detergent he spilled on the floor. I laugh to myself as I get up to get paper towels from the dispenser behind me that he must not have seen. I pull a bunch out and walk over to him to offer my help. He thankfully takes them from me as I return to my chair. Once his little commotion has calmed down he to takes a seat in one of the chairs opposite the room from me and I watch out the corner of my eye as me pulls out a computer.
I KNEW I should have brought work to do
I go back to my phone for a little while but am brought back to reality when I hear a deep voice from across the room. I look up to see the boy looking at me like he had asked me question. I excuse myself for not hearing him the first time over all the machines going.
"I said thanks again for helping me out there. I've never really done laundry before." he chuckles almost looking embarrassed.
"Oh it's no problem." I smile at him and he returns it.
It's a nice smile now that I'm taking the time to really look at him. A nice smile that reaches his eyes which I can clearly tell are a beautiful bright blue even from across a poorly lit, basement laundry room. I watch as he looks down with that smile still on his face as he pulls up at the front of his blonde hair. He looks back up at me and says,
"Hi, I'm Niall"
