Sophie shivered in Fitz's arms as he struggled to keep her afloat. His brilliant teal eyes blinked in and out of focus. Water sloshed over her head again and she spluttered and coughed. Her hands were turning numb from clasping his neck tightly, but she didn't complain. If it wasn't for Fitz, she would be dead. The cold river water had seeped into her clothes and shoes, making her even colder. Fitz pulled a strand of wet hair off her face and a warm feeling started to spread through her body, her cheeks flushing. He held her head a little higher above the raging water but staggered under the current. Sophie whimpered, wishing she could help, but Fitz didn't know how to recover someone from a melder blast and Biana was somewhere else, fighting the Neverseen with the rest of her friends. If Fitz hadn't jumped in to save her, she would have been dead, drowned from the paralysis making her unable to swim. Fitz frowned at her, noticing a long, red cut down the side of her face. He touched her cheek and when he withdrew his hand, his fingers were covered in blood. Her blood. Fitz yelped as his foot slipped again, bringing them closer to the edge, where the raging waterfall was. He may have been able to move upstream on his own, but carrying Sophie, he would never be able to. But Sophie knew he would never save himself and let her go, even if she asked. He was too loyal. "You're bleeding," he said softly. Sophie didn't answer, her teeth were chattering too much. And what would she say anyway, 'duh'? The roar of the waterfall was nearly deafening now as they continued to slide towards the edge, Fitz trying but failing to halt them. "Help!" Fitz yelled again, but just like before no one answered. As they neared dangerously close to the edge, all Sophie could think was, "They've won again." And the Neverseen would keep on winning. "Why us?" Sophie asked herself. She must have said it aloud as Fitz answered, "I don't know. I guess it's because-" a wave went over his head, momentarily cutting him off, "With the Neverseen... we're always missing something. There's always some trick we don't see until it's too late." Sophie tried to nod, but her paralyzed body wouldn't let her. "Bye Fitz," she said, choking back a sob. Tears spilled down his face as he hugged her close and whispered, "I never wanted to die like this." Then they went over the edge.
