"I can't believe you're going to get one of those stupid things." I mutter to my bestfriend Tracie, who was currently pulling a shirt over her head. Her bright red hair popped out and her green eyes looked over to me as she rolled them.
"You know, Faith, jut because you think that they are stupid, doesn't mean the rest of the population does." I laughs, quickly brushing through her hair. Freckles scattered her cheeks and her teeth were probably some of the whitest teeth I have ever seen. "And I was wondering-"
"No." I state, crossing my arms and trying my best to scowl.
"C'mon! You're my best friend! Please!" She says, grabbing my arm and lightly tugging on me. Her fingernails were painted a bright pink but now the paint is chipped and some fingers even are missing the color.
I groan loudly and drop my head. I never knew that becoming best friends with Tracie in second grade would have led up to me giving in to going with her while she got a timer implanted into her.
"You know I hate needles and this is just as bad." She says and I scoff.
"Much worse Tracie." I say, meeting our eyes. I could tell that she really really wanted this, so I roll my shoulders and crack my neck then stand up in front of her. "But I'll go." I flash her a wide toothed smile and she pulls me in for a tight hug.
The drive there sucked. I would always end up looking down at her wrists imaging one with a device attached to it. With a ticking clock ticking away to her so called "fate."
"Why do you hate the timer so much Faith?" Tracie asked me breaking the silence as we pulled up to the building.
"It's not that I hate is so much as just a skeptic Trace." I say shrugging and reaching over to un buckle my seatbelt. I thought she would have known why I really hate them by now. The actual reason.
"Why?" She asks turning off the car as the humming of its life dimmed down to silence.
"Because you're relying on a plastic device on you're future, you're love." I shrug again. "I just... don't know about it all." I went silent and Tracie nodded un buckling her seatbelt and getting out of the car. Maybe she got it now.
I walked by her side as we entered the big boxed building painted red with the giant word TiMER in the front. There's windows as the walls and I could already see the other people in a line, big eyed and they seemed so excited for this new transition in their life. Just like Tracie.
'Support. Here for support Faith that's all.' I remind myself before we walk in. A buzz of voices going off in all directions as people are paying and getting ready to go to the back rooms to actually get it. I see people walking out of the back, looking down at their new and "improved" wrists.
"Well hello new comers!" A way too cheery worker greeted us. Her dark chocolate brown hair hung just below her chin and her honey brown eyes were glowing. Her clearly fake smile held at a standpoint as neither Tracie or I answered her. "So, what can we do for 'ya today!?" She said, still smiling. Her red vest tight to her body and her name tag read 'Kara.'
"I was um- looking to see if I could get a timer." Tracie answered, looking down at the worker, Kara's wrist and seeing her timer tick down. 123 days 3 hours 12 minutes and 54 seconds it read. It was really thin and oval shaped, outlined with a light color of orange.
"I would LOVE to grant you the wonderful pleasure of having a timer! If you could follow me please!" Kara practically shouted. I cringed at her words and this time dragged me feet behind the two of them.
Everything was white. The floors, the walls, the counters, the doors. It must be a pain in the ass to keep this place clean. Kara leads us into a room, and shuts the pearly white door behind her. In the room there was a sink (also white), and a hospital looking bed.
"If you could please lay down on the bed." She gestures to the bed in the corner of the room to Tracie and Tracie follows her instructions. I grabbed a chair next to the door and move it next to the bed next to her. She was nervous and I could tell.
"Everything will be fine Trace." I try to sooth her. If I could I would still try to talk her out of it but I know it's what she wants. So I'm gonna be the good friend and be here for her.
Kara wheels over a metal stand that had a cylinder metal wrist holder at the top. It was as though the cylinder was cut in half, perfect for holding arms and wrists. Kara also brought over her own chair with a semi large gun like device. At the end you could see the un touched timer. Three sharp sticks of metal stuck out, that's what's going into her. I watch as Kara grabs Tracie's wrist and sets in into the holder.
"Take a deep breathe hon." She warns, holding the gun thing right above her. I rub her other arm as she looks up at the ceiling and closes her sea green eyes. I hear the tick and feel Tracie wince under my touch and I look over to Kara who is spinning around to put the gun away and down at Tracie's new wrist.
Kara came right back and we all three looked at the timer. It made a quiet beep and then numbers appeared. 5 Days, 12 Hours, 5 minutes and 24 seconds. "Woah." I accidentally blurt out. It's crazy to see the numbers just... Appear like that.
"Woah." Tracie echoes, holding her own wrist and just staring at the numbers.
"Five days! Geez! He's just around the corner isn't he?" Kara says energetically again smiling wide. "Congrats!"
As we walked out of the room Tracie hardly ever said anything, or took her eyes off of the timer. And so did I. I kept thinking of who this person would be and what they would be like to notice where I was walking. I hit something hard but felt grabbed suddenly and hard pulling me
back up from the ground I almost hit. I was forcing my eyes shut still preparing myself for the impact. But nothing.
I slowly open my eyes to meet dark brown ones. A man about my height and curly hair hidden under a fedora, held my arms tightly. He smiled at me - showing his two dimples implanted into each delicate cheek of his. His smile was so enchanting that I almost forgot to smile back.
"Bruno, darling." A girl spoke from beside him. I took a step back from his grip and looked at the woman standing next to him. "We need to go."
I ignore her, "Thanks for catching me." I quietly tell him.
"Anyday." He replies, giving me another smile. I gently smile and walk around the two of them and back up to Tracie who had watched me.
She rolled her eyes when i approached. "What?" I asked. "Way to clutz you're way into Bruno. He's one of my friends Jessica's boyfriend." She tucks her hair behind her ear and turns to walk out of the building as I follow. She must have already paid.
"Don't blame me okay? Blame my feet." I laugh pointing down to my toes. She rolls her eyes once again and I nudge her with my shoulder.
As we got in the car and buckled to get ready I looked over to her wrist again.
"Feel any different?" I ask her and she thinks about it for a little while.
"I don't think so." She answers plainly and I nod, trying to understand. "But it did hurt like hell." And we both laugh.
