Prologue
Six-year-old Jocelyn Rose sat on the wooden bench, in the local park. She swung her legs back and forth, over the edge of the bench. Her mother sat next to her, watching her with a smile. Her eyes, those multi coloured eyes, looked hesitant through her almost-amber wind-swept hair. It was full of coloured streaks, that Jocelyn always liked. She herself had inherited her father's hair, a crimson colour.
"Little Gem?" Her mother asked.
"Yes Mummy?" Jocelyn looked up at her mum.
"Have you ever wondered how Mummy makes things float, or why she has colourful hair?"
"Yes I do but I like Mummy's hair."
Her mum chuckled "that's good, because I have a secret to tell you, but you need to promise not to tell..."
"I promise!"
"Okay Little Gem, you see, you and I are fairies, we are fair folk and no one else knows but you and mummy."
Jocelyn gasped "Wow! I won't tell anyone! But will anyone notice how different we are?"
Her mum smiled down at her "Maybe. But don't worry, we'll be okay."
