86 DAYS
The dazzling purple lights of the stage filled the stadium, the crowd erupting into cheers. The screens on the stage have 'AbiAbu' and 'One Last Love' written all over them. Beside me, Laila screams Abigail's name right in my ear.
"Calm down, child!" I yell over the crowd, but I can barely hear myself. The cheering is one thing, having a chipmunk scream next to me is another.
"How can I calm down when ABIGAIL ABUCHI is standing on a stage right in front of me?!" Laila squeals back, an ecstatic expression plastered on her face.
Abigail's trademark upbeat music kicks in, as she turns around on the stage and sings her heart out, while Laila sings along the entire time, not missing a single lyric, but it's not like anyone could tell if she messed up with the music booming from the speakers all around.
As the crowd screams again at the end, Laila turns to me, seemingly snapping out of a trance.
"Veda! I can't believe you're gonna be on that stage soon!" she says, almost out of breath. "It's so big! And the lights though- just wow. You are going to look amazing."
"We don't have to think about that just yet," I say, eyeing the stage while speaking to Laila. "People have barely started prepping."
"Still though."
As Abigail's next uncharacteristically sad song, 'Never Going Home' begins to play, I notice something out the corner of my eye. To most, it simply would look like a girl being flirty, but this chick was clearly overstepping a man's boundaries.
Upon closer inspection, this woman had unusually sharp teeth. No average human would be able to see them, especially from this distance, but my kind is an exception. Along with this fact, her tongue has a barely visible scar. Maybe a fae? They have strangely long tongues, but some get the painful surgery to make them look more human-like.
As much as I hate to do it illegally, I find myself using my Virtues to look inside her mind, Virtues being a fancy way of saying 'cool superpowers'. A Virtue shared amongst most of my species. Using this type of Virtue is against the law on my planet, and I still stand by it on Earth, except for when I'm suspicious of someone committing a crime. It's used during trials back home, so I created this exception here.
As soon as use this Virtue, my mind fills with the woman- no, Valentina's thoughts.
Leading him out of the stadium.
Craving blood. Wanting this man, Mason, dead.
Longing for chaos, disorder.
Fae...
I have to snap out of her mind immediately, the bloodthirst was so strong it was scary. It isn't like I haven't dealt with worse before, I just haven't in years.
"OMG child, this part gets me every time!" Laila shouts, right as Abigail is about to hit her biggest and moving note.
"Did I e-ver be-long?!" Abigail's powerful voice fills up the entire stadium, and you can clearly hear all her emotions behind the lyrics for the first time, and honestly, I'm in awe.
"Wow..." I mutter, staring as Abigail holds 'belong' for longer than I ever could, in her extravagant, shining purple dress. I suddenly remember why Laila is obsessed with her.
"It sounds even better in person! Argh-! I can't even- oh my god-" Laila keeps cutting herself off, so stunned with Abigail's performance.
"If you're not reacting like this during my solos then I'm gonna be offended," I say with a smirk.
