"Watch it!" Vail gave Matt a shove, and the blade missed his throat by an inch. He stumbled back, shocked but on the defensive, and caught the girl's arm when she came at him again.
Another movement from the side caught Vail's eye. He had an idea what it would be even before he turned—in time to catch the enormous cat as it launched itself at his face. For all its size, it still moved like it was meant to. It twisted with the force of a wild thing, and Vail stumbled back, wrestling with it as its needle claws dug into his jacket and slashed at his face. He slung it to the side. It landed on its feet and pounced again, but this time Vail twisted to the side and caught the thing by the scruff of its neck, using its own momentum to drive its face into the ground, where he cracked its skull with his boot heel.
He straightened up and ducked the stun stick as it went spinning over his head, knife blade gleaming at one end and electricity crackling at the other. Matt had hold of the girl by the wrists as she struggled, trying to kick, bite, and gouge his eyes out all at once. She stomped his foot, and he growled, wrestling her into a bear hug and trapping her arms against his chest. She lunged forward, going for his throat with her teeth this time. He reared his head back and smashed her in the face with his forehead. She went limp, sagging in his arms. He lowered her to the ground and stumbled back, panting and rubbing his forehead.
Vail looked down at the girl, feeling the urge to go puke in the gutter, though it had nothing to do with his concussion this time. The Darkness writhed under her skin, a living thing that railed at them silently. He knelt down carefully to accommodate his pounding headache, and rolled her onto her stomach, planting a knee in her back.
