Jade's POV

I woke up in half-dark, my heart racing from my dream. In it, I had been in trouble and trying to call out to my parents. They didn't come. Because the thing was, I had no parents. I got up.Something moved, and I flinched and went stiff with terror. I was six years old and still afraid of the dark, and the people that had adopted me were evil and terrifying. I refused to call them my family in any way. I was rebellious and different. Suddenly, a shadow reared up and faced me. Glowing red eyes, a lean, scaly body, and wings. Despite my fear, I envied those wings. I wish I had wings, too.I thought then I could fly away. I was snapped out of my thoughts by the thing lunging for me. I wanted to scream, but I wouldn't. I knew what would happen if I did. Instead, I froze stiff with terror.Just as the thing's claws reached me, I blacked out.

I shot up, heart pounding, sweat running down my back. What was it? What was it about that dream that got me terrified, when nothing else would? My mind inspected it, looked over it like a movie reel, but nothing. I sighed and quickly dismissed the thought, glanced at the clock, and promptly swore."Shit. I'm going to be late." I got up and got ready in record speed. On my way out, I glanced at the girl in the mirror. She was strange looking, but beautiful. Long dark hair that seemed to shimmer with purples and greens, a tall, slender yet subtly curvy frame, and flawless skin. That wouldn't have been to odd if it weren't for her eyes. Jade colored, cat-like, they could have been carved from the stone. I snorted, and walked out the door.

I walked to and back from school every day, and I loved it. I knew I was different and I knew I was regarded as a freak, but didn't give a damn. Before, people had bothered me, but now they left me alone. I walked on, deep in thought until I reached the school. I was one of those people who you never seemed to remember no matter how many times you see them.Heads turned as I walked by, and boys smirked. They thought I was fresh meat. I walked to the door, ignoring them all, and shoved it open.
