Chapter Two

Even though I was exhausted, I walked out of school with my shoulders back and my head held high. I'd never understood why, but I hated showing weakness. Even when I was little, my teachers said that I never cried, never complained, and was almost always stoic and silent. So I walked, but instead of going "home," I headed toward the forest, where I could think and do my homework in peace.

When I saw the fringes of the dark, gnarled trees of the forest, I gave a secret half-=smile and sped up, only to discover that, when I got to the place where my tree was, someone was already there. "Hey," I called out "What are you doing here?"
