Waking up, George noticed a figure in the corner of his room. It was his girlfriend, Violet.
"Oh," George mumbled, half asleep. He sat up in his bed, rubbing his eyes. "I didn't know you were coming today." Violet smiled.
"I wanted to surprise you." She said. "Oh, and I got you something." She crossed her arms and grinned again. "I hid it for you." Violet laughed. "Like a game."
Intrigued, George got up and peered under his bed. "Your gift, it's shiny." Violet continued. "And very, very sharp." Her voice turned slightly raspy and deep. When a gleam of light caught George's eye, he reached for it. Using two fingers to grasp the gift, George realized that it was a knife.
"See? You can use it." Violet piped from her corner. George grasped the knife, wrapping his fingers around the handle. George had seen that knife before. It was one that the kitchen staff used. George looked up at his girlfriend. "Kill them." She said, her brown eyes suddenly blank. Violet's voice continued to get deeper and raspier, but George didn't notice. He was too focused on his new tool. "Use it to get out of here. So you can see me again." George stood up, tucking the knife into his waistband. He knew what Violet wanted him to do with it. He looked at her, gazing into her stiff, brown eyes. George could finally see her again. He was so drawn into her that George barely noticed that his nurse had entered his room.
"Hey there George!" The nurse said perkily, looking over to the corner where George was staring. "Who's here with us today?" she asked, coming over to George. "Is it Gracie, Jessica, May, or maybe-"
"Stop acting like you don't see her," George said, tempted to pull out his weapon.
"Look, your girlfriend broke up with you months ago. As soon as you acknowledge that she isn't real, you'll feel better. Promise." George looked over to Violet.
"Do it." She said, voice sounding almost demonic.
"Oh, George." The nurse tapped his shoulder, getting his attention. "The kitchen staff said that you've been eying up their knives all week, and one of them is missing."
"I don't have it," George said as smooth as he could.
"Just give me the knife, George. You know we don't let the patients have weapons in the institution." George held eye contact with his nurse. Violet began repeating 'do it', her voice sounding like radio static.
"Nurse." George looked at her, imagining the ways he could kill her and escape.
"Yes, George?"
"Tell me, what's the secret to love? I don't get it."
"Well, I think the way to a woman's heart is by listening and doing the things she asks." The nurse gave a friendly smile. "Now, can you please give me the-" George's weapon discontinued her sentence, embedding itself into her neck. George looked up at his girlfriend, but her familiar presence was gone.
