The young man gave the judge a hard glare."Mr. Bennett, you have to answer the question."
"So what if I did do what you're accusing me of?" He shot.
"Mr. Bennett, please say yes or no."
After a long time period and irritating questions, the judge finished the verdict. "Mr. Trevor Bennett, I hereby sentence you to fifty hours of community service. Your probation officer will assist you in finding a suitable place to complete your hours." The gavel came down in slow motion right before his eyes. Just like that his freedom ended.
Fifty hours of community service. What was he going to do? A man came up to Trevor and shoving his hand into Trevor's personal space, introduced himself as Mr. Harper. He had been a probation officer for thirteen years. Trevor thought that Mr. Harper needed to hit the treadmill and was in need of a new suit. His current suit was threadbare and was an ugly brown dirt color. Nevertheless, Mr. Harper seemed to take in his new juvie with a good stride.
Mr. Harper took Trevor out to his car and made him get in the back seat. Trevor felt like a small child again - being forced to sit in the back seat. He was glad that his mother was unable to come to his humiliating trial. She was away in England on an extensive business trip for the company which she worked at. She had been gone for two and a half weeks already. She wouldn't have been able to come home even if Trevor needed her. Mr. Bennett, Trevor's father, had died three years prior - leaving his widow to provide for their son alone.
Mr. Harper opened the door and eased into the driver's seat. He leaned his head against the headrest and opened his mouth as if he were going to say something, but then closed it. Trevor was surprised that this man was at a loss for how to say something. If he had been a probation officer for so long, then wouldn't he have gotten used to talking to kids?
"I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your father," Mr. Harper said.
"Me too." Trevor replied.
