Chapter nine
I was sitting on the edge of the boat while Jace was grabbing food. I smoothed down the little black dress I was wearing. It had thick straps that went across my shoulders before crisscrossing in the back. It was tight until it reached my hips where it fanned out and ended about mid-thigh.
I let my feet dangle off the side of the boat into the warm water.
Jace sat down beside me and bumped me with his shoulder. I looked up at him and smiled. He grinned before handing me a wrapped sandwich. I unwrapped it to discover that it was a BLT.
I took a bite and looked out at the ocean and the receding sun. We sat in comfortable silence before I heard him chuckle.
"What?" I asked startled.
"Nothing, it's just that...you've got mayonnaise on your face." He slowly leaned forward and wiped the corner of my mouth with his thumb.
"Thanks," I blushed.
Before I knew it I had finished the whole sandwich and Jace was grinning at me. He got up saying he was going to grab desert.
I heard the engine of another boat and turned just in time to get sprayed with water. I stumbled away from the edge of the boat sputtering.
Before I knew it Jace was by my side with his hands on my waist. "Are you ok?" He asked while pushing my stringy hair out of my face.
"It's just water," I said trying to reassure him that I was fine.
He looked me over. "You're soaked."
"I'm fine, honestly," I insisted.
"You're shaking." A cool breeze had started and was making being drenched uncomfortable. "God, and you're so skinny," he said rubbing his hands up and down my sides. "You need to change."
"I'm fine, besides I don't even have any extra clothes with-" but before I could finish he stripped off his shirt and was handing it to me.
I looked at him shocked. "You can change. I won't look," he said shoving the shirt in my hands before turning his back on me.
I hesitated before slowly peeling my dress off while making sure Jace wasn't looking. I pulled his shirt on over my underwear and cleared my throat. "I'm done."
His shirt smelled like his cologne and I was trying not to think about it too hard as he drove the boat back towards the dock a mile from our house. He let the boat float calmly within distance from the dock. I guess he wasn't quite ready to go home yet, even if I was soaked.
"I'm sorry you got hit with water."
"It's no big deal, honestly."
