Chapter eleven
"I thought you didn't want to," he said quietly.
"I was kind of mid freak out last night..." I said rubbing my hand across the back of my neck. He shrugged as if it didn't matter. "I'm-"
He held up his hand cutting me off. "Please don't apologize. You shouldn't. You don't have to."
"But I do. I shouldn't have said those things to you."
"It's ok. You were upset, with every right to be. I shouldn't have pushed you so far."
"You didn't," I said shaking my head. "Everything was my fault. I kissed you. You wanted to stop but I pursued you. I asked for it."
"Don't," he said sharply. "Never say that. You're never asking for it." I was stunned into silence by how fierce he sounded. "I'm angry. Not at you, but at that boy for doing this to you. For making you feel this way," he raised a hand to trace a line across my cheek but I couldn't help but flinch. "For making you flinch when someone wants to show genuine affection. For giving you nightmares, for giving you panic attacks, for making you blame yourself. For making you feel like you're not good enough."
"For breaking me," I said quietly.
Jace shook his head with a sad smile. "You're not broken. You're perfect, just the way you are," he said taking my hand in his. "But if you think you're broken, I'd stay with you until I could help put you back together again. Then you'd realize that you were never broken, never shattered. That you never needed fixing. That you are stronger than anyone around you. That you are loved. Every little detail that he made you hate about yourself is loved. I love your dimples when you smile, and the way your eyes shine when you laugh. I love your long brown hair and your soft skin. I love your voice, when you talk to me or when you sing. I love the crinkles by your eyes. I love the way your hands move across a guitar. I love the way you lose yourself in music. I love the serious look you get when you space out. I love the pink that races across your cheeks when you blush. I love the determination written across your face when you surf. I love how you push your hair behind your ears when you're nervous. Or how you look around for help when you're flustered. I love how you care for others more when you should be caring for yourself. I love your heart, your soul. I love everything about you." I'm not sure when I had started crying but I lifted my hands to push the tears away but Jace beat me to it. He used his thumbs to wipe away my tears and I gave him a small smile. "Let me," he whispered. "Let someone else take care of you for a change. I would never hurt you."
"I know," I whispered.
"Look..." he said slowly. "Let's just forget the whole thing with the boat never happened." He smiled and gave me a quick hug before jogging up the stairs.
“What if I don’t want to forget?” I whispered to myself.
