Small steps

It has been a couple weeks since he was let out of the facility, he finally settled down in a small town, consisting of a few people, two families, and a couple to be precise. Well, not much of a town to be honest, but it's a start. He got familiar with the locals of course, and they actually gained his trust fairly easily, and he gained theirs. They were simple people, living without harm. They have been robbed many times, and a few children died in the process, the burial ground has grown with one more body a few day before Matthew even showed up, so it was not really a surprise as to why they didn't trust him at first, though he gave them a few seeds to plant, and they were very grateful. Matthew ended up building a small shack to sleep in, and they try their best to not bother him. He of course he has to wait till fall and winter is over to plant a few sunflower seeds to soak up the radiation, sunflowers are very tedious plants to grow.

They were illiterate, so Matthew taught the kids the alphabet, along with the parents as well. The couple in on of the houses loved his company, the wife hit on him, but she was always joking, he can tell from the way she was always love sick when her husband was out scavenging for food, supplies, or building materials. Matthew was at least near Manitoba by now, he could tell, he can feel it. Matthew pulled out a small book:

Second settlement, hopefully I will stay here permanently, these people are nice. The children treat me well, and are very eager to learn both English and French, I'm teaching them English first of course, I'm not sure if they would grasp French. Oh, I'm also helping them put up a wall for defense so they wouldn't get robbed easily.

Matthew put down his pencil and cranes his neck a bit. He likes it here very much, maybe he can build this settlement little by little. He smiles and stands up to put on his parka. It's pretty late in summer, so he can't really grow any food. However he will try and build a place where they will relieve themselves, the houses to have toilets, but he's not sure if they would risk stinking up their houses in the winter. Plus, there is the food problem, they scavenged other places for non perishable food, but no luck. They were tempted to eat kuma once or twice, but Matthew put a stop to it before they had a final say. A few animals came by once in a while, like cats or dogs, so the people in the small area ate that instead. And if winter were to approach, the animals would be in hibernation, so one family actually breed cats like chickens so they could eat. The idea sickened Matthew at first, but they had to stay alive some how. So eventually Matthew has to get used to the idea of eating cats or dogs. But they can't just survive on cats all winter, they needed something else for them to eat. He didn't want any body to get a disease from their only food supply. Cats are not really hygienic to begin with, but what can he do? He can't harvest sunflower seeds due to all the radiation they might soak up, not only that, but they won't grow right away, and the moment they would sprout, the cold will kill them. Matthew taps his chin as he rests on the bed. He sighs and puts on his boots. Kuma rolls out from under the bed and looks up, "where are you going?" He asks Matthew, "I'm going to check on the family to see if the are up to building the wall, the sooner it gets done the better," he tells kuma. Kuma blinks and waddles his way up to Matthew, "be safe," he nuzzles Matthews hand, "I will," he tells kuma. "Who?" Matthew rolls his eyes and makes his way to the door, "and don't eat anything yet, wait till I get back," he tells the small bear. Kuma tilts his head and walks away. Matthew sighs and walks out the door into the cold.

He felt a chill across his back, either a nation waltzed into his country, or its the wind, either way he was a little uncomfortable with both scenarios. However he shook it off and walked to the house.

He knocks on the door, and a woman opens it, "oh, Matthew! It's a pleasure to see you, how are you right now?" She asks him. Matthew can tell she just woke up due to her groggy state and vulnerable stance, "I am doing fine Mrs. Bedrow, how are the kids?" He asks politely, she chuckles sleepily, "still being kids I suppose, they are asleep right now though, did you need something?" She asks him. Matthew nods, "Is your husband up yet Mrs. Bedrow?" He asks her. She smiles, "please Matthew, call me Tanya, and yes, he actually went out hunting this morning, when he comes back I'll send him over," she wipes away her stray hairs from her face, "thank you Mrs- Tanya," Matthew chuckles. Mrs. Bedrow just laughs it of. "Well, good day Matthew, I'm sure you're very busy." She says while tucking her auburn hair behind her ear, "yes, thank you for your time," he backs away as she closes the door.

Matthew nods to himself with approval and makes his way to the other house. The Xiang residence to be precise. They are little bit uptight, but they mean well, they are very hardworking, and help out the best they can, and they are very strict. Matthew knocks on the door. The door opens revealing Mr. Xiang, "hello Mr. Xiang, I need help building that wall," Matthew folds his hands together. Mr. Xian is very intimidating, he is very quiet. However he nods his head, "I will get my tools ready, let me know when you want to start," He says in a stern monotonous voice. Matthew nods and Mr. Xiang closes the door.

Matthew sighs happily, today is going to be productive.
