Luca's POV
"What do we do now?" Adeline asked me. To be honest I didn't really know. This wasn't something that I was familiar with. I knew that we were in a very dire situation. I didn't know how to face it though. I've never really been the best at facing my problems. This was a problem that I didn't want to face. I knew that I had too though, for Adeline.
"Stay close to me. were going to try and go back to the house and get whatever we need. We can't stay there though, we have to leave. You get that right?" I asked while gripping the metal pole in my hands.
I looked over at Adeline and she was facing the ground. She was swinging the ax in her hands. Every now and then, a drop of blood would fall off and onto the pavement sidewalk we were standing on.
She slowly nodded and I heard her sniffle. "Ya. Ya, I get it. Let's get going." She quickly walked off and I followed close behind her. I was trying to make as little sound as possible. I didn't know where those things were. They could jump out from anywhere and come after Adeline or me.
I knew that Adeline was taking this way harder than I was. I mean, I was scared of course, but not for myself. I was scared for Adeline. I didn't really care about what would happen to me as long as my little sister was safe.
After our parents died, I made sure to keep an eye on her. I had already lost my parents, and I wasn't going to lose my sister either. Adeline always tried to be strong in situations that she didn't have to be strong in. I always told her that it was ok to not be ok all of the time. Of course, I never took my own advice though.
The walk to our house was oddly silent. No neighborhood should be that quiet. That night the only thing that could be heard was the sound of Adeline and I breathing. Our steps fell into pace with each other.
"Where are we going to go?" Adeline asked me. I hadn't really thought about it. It's sort of strange that I hadn't thought of the most crucial part of the plan. where were we going to stay and be safe from the infected things? I really needed to come up with a better name for those fuckers.
"When we find somewhere safe, we'll stake out there," I explained walking further ahead. I twirled the metal pole in my hands like a baton. It made a whoosh sound as I spun it.
"So in other words, you have no idea where we are going to go." Adeline walked in pace next to me. I could see her watching me through my peripheral vision. I didn't want to look her in the eye. She had the power to break someone down with a single look.
"Yep," I answered. There was a moment of silence before I spoke again. "But don't worry. We're gonna be fine, as long as we stick together." I finally looked up and looked my sister in the eye.
Her eyes were soft and scared. I hated that she was scared. But what was I supposed to do for her except keep her safe? That's all that I needed to do, keep my sister safe. As we were walking, I realized how far away we were from the house. How did we even get there?
Adeline and I walked in comfortable silence. She was mindlessly swinging her ax, while I was keeping high security and watching our surroundings. I didn't know anything about these things. I wanted to learn their weaknesses and strengths. How strong were they? How fast were they?
I needed to find a way to beat them. I knew one thing for sure, the world was never ever going to be the same. Adeline and I would always have to be on guard, and cautious. I didn't want to live like that, but it was better than dying.
Once we finally reached home, I noticed something off. Our door was open. I was positive that I had locked it. Could one of those things even open a door? It seemed unlikely, but I didn't know anything about them yet.
