I never had this much fun breaking into a warlock's house. Especially when that warlock is Lorenzo Rey. Ugh, I hate that guy with a passion. I'm pretty sure he doesn't have any friends. The only thing that sucks about this mission is that I'm not the one sneaking in. I'm the distraction. Well, fine. That's what I'm good at anyway.
I sighed before I knocked on the door. I started to look around, my hands behind my back, while I waited for Lorenzo to open the door. I found Alec and Magnus by the window near his living room just waiting for me to open it. The door slowly opened, making me turn around, and Lorenzo stood on the other side, arms crossed.
"Senora Herondale," he started. Already a judgmental look on his face. "I suppose you're here to defend Magnus Bane?"
I gave him my best charming smile. "No. Actually, I'm here to defend you. I might not be Head of the Institute but I'm still a Shadowhunter. I want the Shadowhunter World safe and that includes the warlocks."
"And what about your fiance, Miss Herondale?"
"You let me worry about Alec. If he's going to listen to reason, then it's going to come from me." These next words are like poison to me. I hate saying this because it's nothing but a lie. "And, unlike him, I won't let my friendship with Magnus get in the way."
Lorenzo seemed satisfied with my answer, just for a bit. "What if I can prove that Magnus is involved? Seems like you have a conflict of interest, no?"
Conflict of interest my ass. I shook my head. Be the soldier I use to be. "My only interest is stopping the person who corrupted your ley lines." Suddenly Stark stood behind him. He waved his hand around in a hurry up motion. Bitch, don't tell me to hurry up.
"He's testing you," he sang. "Show him you mean business."
I bit my lip to not say anything. Then I looked at Lorenzo, who raised his brow at me. "You have my word."
"Not a very loyal fiance or friend, are you?" Lorenzo asked. Then he smirked. "Well, you did run around with the dragon. So it's hard to tell where your loyalties lie."
"Ooh," Stark mocked. "He's got you there." Don't punch Stark in the face. Don't punch Stark in the face.
"My loyalty is to the Clave," I said sternly. "We believe in justice. If you don't want me here to take an official statement, then I'll be on my way. But if anything like this happens again, you'll only have yourself to blame." Stark gave me a thumbs up with a little wink.
"Of course," Lorenzo said as he opened his door more wide. He motioned me to come in. "And how rude of me to leave you out in the open."
I nodded towards him as I made my way inside. Phase one, complete. Lorenzo gestured for me to follow him into his parlor as he used his other hand wave the doors shut. This house looks like something you'll see in a magazine. A very tacky magazine, but a magazine nonetheless.
"Do you really believe that Magnus would do this out of spite?" I asked. Stark let out a low whistle as he could finally examine the place.
"A lot of expensive things in here," he said. "If only there was a certain, soon-to-be, dragon that could just burn this place down." I ignored him.
"Magnus Bane is the only warlock I know capable of conjuring that type of demonic magic," Lorenzo said.
Stark rolled his eyes. "That's what they all say. They always blame the other guy to take the attention away from the real culprit. It's probably Lorenzo. Just kill him now. Your buddy could have his old job back."
I glared at him. "Shut it," I whispered harshly.
"Did you say something?" Lorenzo asked.
Stark smirked at me and gestured for me to continue. I cleared my throat. "I said if Magnus is really behind this I'll turn him over to the Clave myself."
