The house was lively when Fredrick opened the door, the coldness of the metal handle soaking into his already cold hands. Taking a breath he pushed the door open into the hall, a golden Labrador waiting for him by the rug.Mia was a golden Labrador that Fredrick had got when he was 13, the family had wanted a dog for a while so decided to get Fredrick it for his birthday.
Stroking Mia as he walked past her, his dad was the first to approach bending slightly to whisper that his mother had told the family what had happened at the hospital already in his ear. Smiling sadly as he pulled away he placed a hand on Fredrick's shoulder and guided him through to the kitchen, closely followed by Mia who never left his side when he was in the house.
The kitchen was full of sounds and smells when they entered, his mother busy at the stove, his younger siblings setting the table and his older brother sitting on the breakfast table eating the vegetables that were laid out. The family were talking and laughing about their day non of them mentioning the hospital appointment, it was an unwritten rule the family had made when Fredrick got diagnosed, they wouldn't talk about the cancer at family meal times or when the younger siblings were present. The older family would talk about it later if need be.
Fredrick always ate with family, he wanted to cherish the time he had with them so made it possible with every opportunity.
