Chapter Six
Angel's POV
I returned home and had dinner with my mother. I told her about how I ran into Tyler, and her eyes widened in surprise. "You saw him?"
Yeah. I also slept with him, I wanted to add, but I knew it would give my mom a heart attack.
"What did he say?" she asked. "Did he insult you or hurt your feelings?"
"No," I answered. "He was very polite, actually."
"Oh! That's a... surprise. He's not mad anymore?"
I shook my head.
"That's good. They shouldn't include you in their hatred. You've done nothing wrong."
"You can't blame them, Mom. I'm your daughter."
"It's been five years since Ben died. All the hate from his family won't rest his soul."
I grew up with the Reed family as our neighbor. Tyler's sister, Beth, was my best friend. We went to school together every morning with Tyler and hung out almost every day. Tyler was a year older than us. He was always a smart and handsome boy, and being an athlete in school added to his popularity. I couldn't help but be attracted to him.
I was fifteen when my dad died. Beth was vacationing in Hawaii to visit her grandmother at the time. But Tyler was there, and he comforted me. He never left my side. He was always there when I needed someone. Tyler helped me ease my loneliness. We became close until he asked to be my boyfriend. I was surprised to learn that he always had a crush on me, but he had waited for me to grow up before he made his move.
We were so young and in love. We went to watch movies, ride bikes, study together, shop, or swim at the beach. We did everything together. I was so happy with Tyler.
But not all love stories have a happy ending.
Less than a year after Dad died, my mother was caught sleeping with Ben Reed, Tyler's father. One morning Tyler's mom came into our house. She saw them together and became hysterical. I could still see clearly as she slapped and cursed my mom for sleeping with her husband. She called my mom and me every vile name and made me cringe—whores, sluts, prostitutes. Tyler came and pulled her out of our house, but I didn't miss the way he looked at me, like I was a piece of dirt.
He hated me just like she did.
Since that day, Tyler avoided me. I waited for him at our meeting place by the pond every day, but he didn't come. Two weeks later, Mom and I moved from our house. We couldn't tolerate the demeaning looks and gossip from our neighbors.
