Loud, harsh knocking on the door made Atsushi nearly jump out of his skin. He waited for a moment, wondering if he had imagined the noise, until another round of rowdy knocking made him run for the door.
He slowly creaked it open, almost terrified about who it could be, and was more than surprised to see a short, bad tempered and considerably drenched young mafioso.
It would have been normal for Atsushi to have been scared out of his wits, but the two had actually met before when he was out shopping with Kyouka for sweets for the agency, and the other man was with the mafia boss's.. daughter, was it?
"Chuuya, right?"
The other man grunted and made a gesture if he could be let in, to which Atsushi immediately lept aside and shut the door after him.
He watched Chuuya take off his shoes and tie back his hair, remove his coat and sit down by the small table.
It wasn't long before Atsushi realised he had just let one of the most important, brutal and powerful mafia executives into his house, and he tried to push aside the image of Kunikida shouting about disgracing the agency and mingling with criminals.
"So..what brought you here?" He asked as politely as he could, remembering the fact that he must look quite sloppy with his black t shirt and grey sweat pants.
Surprisingly, the reply he got was an awkward shift from the unexpected visitor that he thought looked like a sign of...embarrassment?
"Well," Chuuya started, rubbing the back of his neck. "I kinda got..locked out of my apartment."
For a few seconds Atsushi stared, which made him get a defensive glare from the short tempered man in front of him.
He quickly smiled and waved in dismissal. "Oh, don't worry, it's okay for you to be here..but.."
Chuuya sighed and fiddled with the carpet before mumbling: "I did try knocking on my colleague's places, but they were all out. I didn't really know where to go and it was chucking it down and then I remembered your place."
Atsushi sat by him and nodded as though saying he understood. It was strange to see such a terrifying man act like a toddler.
"Couldn't you have tried Dazai's place? I thought you two were-"
He quickly stopped when he saw the dark expression from Chuuya, which looked pained as though he was remembering doing something similar before.
It was an expression he had seen many people make - especially Kunikida.
"Right, guess that would end badly."
There was some silence, but the small man leant back on one hand and placed the other on his lifted knee to rest his head on.
"You know..he once locked himself out of his apartment, and when he came in the next day he was so drenched that he looked like a horror movie character. His friend Oda had to blast him with a hairdryer, but when he was dried down, his hair got all fluffy and frizzy and he looked like a puff ball."
Atsushi smiled, imagining such a hilarious image of what he thought to be one of the most elegant people he knew, and replied with a story of his own: "Once he had a frog on his head from jumping in the river, and he didn't notice until hours later when it jumped into his tea. I've never seen him look so scared before."
Chuuya laughed (wickedly, Atsushi noticed) and the two exchanged stories for what felt like hours, turning the conversation to their co workers and what it's like to work at the mafia and the agency (Atsushi was more than happy to hear stories about Aktugawa embarrassing himself).
At around nine o'clock, another knock at the door sounded, and when the second visitor entered the room Atsushi was starting to feel like a guest house for mafiosos.
Kouyo stood in the doorway, completely untouched by the downpour and fondly smoothing her fiery hair, which fell down to her waist like a path of autumn leaves. Her usual traditional outfit was replaced by a seemingly tailor made black suit, but her eyes were still adorned with blood red make up, giving her the appearance of a bird of prey.
"I've come to collect Chuuya from day care." Her words almost smiled as she spoke them, and she entered the room with the authority of a mother. "I saw that you got locked. You left your keys in the office last night, silly boy. But thanks to the chip I put in your phone I managed to find you soon enough."
Chuuya rolled his eyes but made no hesitation in getting up and collecting his things.
Kouyo turned her stare over to Atsushi, and with the curiosity of a child she broke her motherly facade. "How is Kyouka? Is she eating well? Working hard?"
Atsushi smiled as a way of confirming her inquiries, and felt a fondness for the woman, as she smiled at him with a glowing expression.
Chuuya coughed and Kouyo quickly threw him the key to his apartment, and the two boys exchanged a friendly goodbye before Atsushi was once again alone in his apartment.
He sighed and ran his fingers through his white, messy hair. He could finally relax.
At least he thought he could, until his phone rang.A/N:
The part about Atsushi and Chuuya bumping into each other shopping for sweets was taken from the second BSD anthology :)
