"I hope you know that this is a ritual that's going to bind us together for life."

"Shut up Jeongguk, all you're doing is carving our initials on a tree."

"It's not a tree, it's the tree. This will bring us together no matter where we are and who we end up being like—"

"Hurry up Guk, my mom will kill me if I'm late for dinner!"

Everyone talks about the heartbreak you feel when you loose a lover but why doesn't anybody talk about the heartbreak that friends give you?

Min Hana felt her heart clench as she stood under the tree for the last time. So many memories in one place, it was a bad idea but leaving Busan without coming here one last time would just make her feel incomplete.

This was her way of saying goodbye to Busan. For her Busan was Jeon Jeongguk; doe eyes and midnight hair with the most endearing smile in her life. She couldn't say goodbye to Busan without saying bye to this specific spot, this specific tree because it was Jeongguk and he had been everything for her in this city.

From the walks on the roads to the food they ate on the roadside, catching snowflakes on their tongues in December to him picking out flowers and placing them in her hair because 'you're the princess of Busan' and 'princesses deserve the best.'

Hana closes her eyes, breeze caressing her skin as she traced the 'J+H' carved out on the bark of the tree with her finger. The imprint as familiar to her as the back of her hand.

"I miss you so much Guk," she whispers with eyes now open looking at the single red flower blooming on the tree, "and I'm so proud of where you are," she gulps, "but I hope I don't see you again."

But soulmates are destined to come together, no matter what goes against them.
