Ginger the Wonder Cat
Bianca scampered up the tree in a haste, narrowly escaping her attacker's reach. With a sharp hiss, the devious creature flashed it's gleaming claws and scaled the trunk of the tree with alarming speed. Within a minute it had reached Bianca's narrow branch, and was slowly making its way towards the young girl.
Unconcerned, Bianca sat joyfully until the beast was a mere inches away. Then, with a careless laugh, she jumped lithely onto the grassy field, waving happily up at the shocked monster. Wind blew through the clearing as the beast clambered to get out of the tree, causing it to jump back, clinging to the branch. The demon let out an ear piercing yowl.
Bianca's smile only grew as she rolled her eyes and let out a sigh. "MOM! Ginger got stuck up in grandad's tree again!"
At the sound of her name, the small kitten lifted her head and turned to face her owner. Any look of remorse or terror had faded from her whiskered face, instantly replaced with the most smug look Bianca had ever seen on the face of a cat. The orange tabby sat back on her rear paws, stretching in an imperious manner. Confused Bianca blinked, and when she opened her eyes, all she could see was a ball of orange fur hurtling at her face. But the little monster landed on its feet, once again mere inches from it's quite obviously surprised owner. She looked up at Bianca with innocent eyes and mewed smugly, as if to say 'I win'.
With impeccable timing Bianca heard a door open, turning just in time to see her mother running out of their tiny gray house, broom and blanket in tow.
"Mom, your a tad too late. Ginger the wonder cat decided she was going to hurtle herself out of the tree head first."
Her mom dropped the broom, a look of exaggerated frustration crossing her dark face. " I swear B, that cat of yours is causing me more gray hairs than you do", she said with a sigh. "And that is saying thousands".
Bending over she placed a sloppy kiss on her muddy daughter's cheek, and Bianca giggled. She scooped Ginger up with the white fleece blanket her mother had been carrying.
"Well mom, for your information-", Bianca was cut off when a series of strangled whimpering noises rang out through the autumn air.
At the horrible noise, Ginger sprang out of Bianca's confused arms, bounding towards the bushes and the noise.
" Wait! Ginger come back! Don't go into the thorn bushes!". If the kitten could hear Bianca, she showed no signs of slowing. Panicked, Bianca slipped of her slippery rain boots and followed her pet through the grass and into the woods barefoot, ignoring her mother calling out behind her.
Ginger dodged and weaved through trees and rocks, never stopping once. Every time she slowed or hesitated, another piercing whimper rang out and the cat ran onward. Finally, she slowed to a stop, poking her tiny pink nose around an old, raspberry bush.
Bianca also stopped, breathing heavily from the long run, wincing in pain from the new cuts on the soles of her feet. She could still hear her mom calling for her frantically, although their tiny gray house seemed to be the size of a leaf, so far off in the distance.
Suddenly angry, she whirled around to face to the indifferent kitten pawing at the bush.
" What was that for?!", she screamed as frustrated tears poured over her face, which was red and hot from both anger and exertion. " Why would you scare me like that you ignoramus! If you wanted to show me some stupid bush, I would have followed you without the chase scene you.. You poopy head!" Twelve year old Bianca had certainly used bette insults than poopy head and ignoramus. She didn't even think people still knew what ignoramus meant. But she was so worked up she couldn't bring herself to care about the lack of creativity, or the fact she was trash talking a cat. And loosing.
Ginger looked up at Bianca, small green eyes narrowed, as if to say 'get over'. Then with a loud mew, she plunged into the giant raspberry hedge.
"Fantabulous", Bianca muttered, and she followed her cat into the hedge.
Pushing through itchy leaves and scraping thorns, she found Ginger leaning over a pile fluff, presumably a dead animal of sorts. But the 'dead animal' let out the same painful noise that Bianca earlier with her mom.
Gasping, she dropped to her knees and crawled forward leaning over the creature next to her troublesome feline friend. Gently, she rolled the bundle of fur over, her curiosity overtaking her anger.
The creature howled in pain and Bianca quickly retracted her hand. It was a puppy, a golden lab, by looks of it. And the poor thing looked horrible. It's small paw was bent at an odd angle, a long gash in it's side steadily leaking blood, matting it's fur in the stuff. A chunk of it's left ear was missing and the smaller wound was bleeding almost as much.
"Oh", Bianca whispered breathily. " I bet you're the poor baby that's been making all the racket." She turned to Ginger, who was licking her paws, looking utterly satisfied with herself. Sorry for yelling at you. You did well, Ginger the amazing wonder cat."
Bianca stood, extending her arm to Ginger, who climbed it without hesitation, seating herself atop Bianca's head. Bianca then lifted the puppy who had fallen into a restless sleep. Making her way through the hedges, she set off towards the safety of her tiny gray house.
