"Hey, baby, so listen. If spring training goes well... we could be moving to Florida." My mother told me over to the phone. Seconds later, I heard an automated voice. "Please insert a dollar-twenty-five for an additional three minutes."

"Mom, where's your cell?" I asked, amused. I was sitting cross-legged on my bed, with my homework in my lap. A pen in one hand and a phone in the other.

"Okay, don't laugh... I didn't lose my power cord, it ran away." She joked, as I could hear her putting change into the machine. I laughed at that, picturing her face. "Screaming! I literally repel technology now."

"I miss you." I told her and I did, I really did. I missed her so much. We were very close before. She was pretty much my only friend. So going from that to this was difficult.

"Awh, baby, I miss you too." She told me, and I could tell she was smiling. "But tell me more about your school. Now, what are the kids like? Are there any cute guys...? Are they being nice to you?"

I scoffed. I wasn't about to tell my mother about the strange girl to who had occupied my mind the whole day. "Well... they're all very welcoming." I said, sarcastically. Although it was sarcastic, it was also partly true. I'd made a few friends already and they were all really nice. It was just that girl.

"Uh-oh. Tell me all about it." She ordered, sensing that I was upset. I probably shouldn't have said that. My mother was one to worry and she probably wouldn't let this go.

"It doesn't... even matter." I said, slamming my homework book shut and roughly pushing it to the side. I was irritated and confused, but who wouldn't be?

"Yes, it does, honey." She told me, sympathetically. I knew she was only being my mom, but I didn't want to answer these questions. I didn't even know the answers to these questions.

"I have homework to do. Um... I'll talk to you later." I announced, suddenly. I knew she'd have even more questions now, but she didn't ask them just yet.

"Okay. I love you."

"Love you too."

I planned to confront her... and demand to know what her problem was.

But she never showed.

I noticed that her siblings kept staring at me. Some more harsh than others. For example, Dinah's stare was more of a confused one. Whereas, Ashley's was a death stare. She also seemed to hate me. For no apparent reason.

And the next day,

Another no-show.

More days passed. Things were getting a little... strange.

The weather only seemed to get worse. It was icy outside and I was having to keep adding layers every day. As I was leaving my house that morning, I saw that Alejandro had just arrived home, but he was in my truck.

I walked down the stone stairs and me being the klutz that I am, tripped on a slippery piece of ice that was just laying there on the floor. I hated the weather, here. I landed on my butt and gasped. I then laughed at myself. What an idiot.

Alejandro ran over to me in his police uniform and gripped my alarm, pulling me back onto my feet. "You alright?" He asked, laughing a little himself.

"Yeah, I'm good." I replied. "Ice doesn't really help the uncoordinated."

He brushed off my back and then let me go. I swung my orange backpack back over my shoulder. "Yeah, uh... that's why I had some new tires put on the truck. Old ones were getting pretty bald." He explained, kicking one of the tires with his right foot. He really did care about me and he was thoughtful, sometimes.
